A senior U.S. official says the United States is open to discussions with Russia on curtailing possible future deployments of offensive missiles in Ukraine and putting limits on U.S. and NATO military exercises in Eastern Europe as part of strategic talks to begin next week.

Y MATTHEW LEE, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is open to discussions with Russia on curtailing possible future deployments of offensive missiles in Ukraine and putting limits on U.S. and NATO military exercises in Eastern Europe as part of strategic talks to begin next week, a senior Biden administration official said Saturday.

But, the official said any agreements on either matter would be contingent on Russia removing threats to Ukraine and that no decisions would be made without the consent of Ukraine or NATO. The official also said there was no chance the U.S. would reduce its military presence or arsenal in Eastern Europe as Russia has demanded.

The U.S. official’s comments, made to reporters on condition of anonymity in a White House-organized telephone conference call, were the first to suggest a willingness to compromise on issues tangential to Ukraine.

They came as senior U.S. and Russian diplomats prepare to meet in Switzerland on Monday.

If we ever need them, we have plenty. There will be plenty of FR neocons upset about this. This was a perfect opportunity to defeat the Russian Army or so I’ve been told.

We’ve been through nonproliferation with Russia before. And the arms race continued. Neither side will trust the other, with good cause, nor be up front with their supplies.

As of early 2021, it is estimated that Russia has a stockpile of nearly 4,500 nuclear warheads assigned for use by long-range strategic launchers and shorter-range tactical nuclear forces. This number is a little higher than last year due to the addition of the fourth Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine (SSBN) and an increase in non-strategic warheads. Most analysts consider nonstrategic weapons to be shorter-range delivery systems with lower-yield warheads that might attack troops or facilities on the battlefield and used when their friendlies are reasonably present.

Of the stockpiled warheads, approximately 1,600 strategic warheads are deployed: just over 800 on land-based ballistic missiles, about 624 on submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and 200 at heavy bomber bases. Another 985 strategic warheads are in storage, along with about 1,912 nonstrategic warheads. In addition to the military stockpile for operational forces, a large number of approximately 1,760 retired but still largely intact warheads await dismantlement, for a total inventory of approximately 6,257 warheads.

The US has 3,750 nuclear warheads in its stockpile and 2,000 are waiting to be dismantled, according to a release from the State Department in October of 2021.

But that is just the main players. Countries like the UK, France, Israel, Pakistan, India, China and North Korea. And if you look into countries trying to get a nuclear possibility, you run into countries like Taiwan, Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Iraq, and Iran. And these are called possibilities because no one has determined they may already have them and may be deployable. At least they aren’t admitting it. But that’s consistent with everyone else as no one is admitting anything that can be verified, i.e., the truth. The new word is transparency. The older word is lie.

Ever heard the term “dogpile?”

I’m sure for the right amount of money, Joe Bob and the surrender monkeys will send the extra missiles to China….whatever it takes to keep Russia happy….

Russia is still going to invade Ukraine. Oh, well. We have no legal obligation to defend Ukraine. That being said, I hope Ukraine wins (but the odds are not in its favor; not even close).

Russia isn't abiding by the treaties and is itself mass producing new nukes well beyond treaty limits. Why do you think they want Kazakhstan so bad??? It's where they keep a bunch of nukes.

I will agree with Russia (and any other country) on this point.

There should never be nuclear or long-range missiles deployed beyond US borders.

The nukes existing in the US and Russia are enough to destroy the world 400 times over. In 1985 it was enough to do it 40000 times. The Chinese have a long way to go and it won’t change the strategic balance much.

Nope. They couldn’t “destroy the world” one time over. They could certainly destroy much of each other’s populations and their industrial and military might.
