Good Riddance to Ralph Northam and Terry McAuliffe
Reason ^ | 30 Dec 2021 | Jason Russell

It's rare for a single election result to spell the likely end of the careers of two politicians, but Virginia Democrats appear to have accomplished just that in 2021. With Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin's two–percentage point upset victory, angry parents likely put an end to the careers of current Gov. Ralph Northam and 2014–2018 Gov. Terry McAuliffe. As we bid adieu to 2021, let's take a ride down memory lane as we also bid good riddance to Northam and McAuliffe.

McAuliffe's four years in office were plagued by corporate cronyism, which was not surprising given that an electric car company McAuliffe founded was excessively dependent on subsidies (the company sought subsidies for a factory in Virginia, but ended up with Mississippi's subsidies instead). Nonetheless, the company's lobbyist was McAuliffe's first appointment after winning the 2013 election. McAuliffe did manage to bring some jobs to Virginia—all it took was a meager $5 million grant to get Stone Brewing to create 300 jobs in Richmond, for instance. Another $5 million from the state brought the Corporate Executive Board and 800 jobs to Arlington, Virginia, while Nestle USA got the big bucks: $10 million in cash grants (for just 750 jobs).

Now, and if YOU TUBER Red Eagle Politics (if you haven't see his videos, watch them. A young Conservative guy) is correct, Glenn Youngkin might not be a strong Conservative (in the Ron DeSantis mold) but he's better than the Bag man and Mr. Blackface...

I believe Sears might keep Youngkin from going squishy on us...

The question is, can Northam get along well as the VP under President Kamala Harris? A long time until their re-election.

He would be the new counterbalance on the ticket, attracting male voters and non ethnic ones.

We know all about that. I was under no impression that Youngkin was a MAGA candidate. This is Virginia and it is the best we can do in a blue state. He is better than the eternally corrupt McAuliffe, so I'm OK with that.

Youngkin won by only 65,000 votes out of 3.3 million, so a MAGA candidate would have lost.

Youngkin lost every single jurisdiction in Northern Virginia and only did marginally better than Trump. Trump won only 28% of the vote in Fairfax County in 2020 and Youngkin won 34.5%, just enough of an increase to eke out a win.

Ground zero Loudoun County was also a bust. Youngkin lost Loudoun by 12,000 votes under the most incredibly perfect political circumstances for a Republican and even under these circumstances, still lost Loudoun.

So instead of complaining and whining, Youngkin's win is a big plus.

The bigger picture is that the win is a big boost in recruiting candidates for 2022.It shows that the wind is at the Republicans back at the moment and victory is possible. That helps cement those candidates that may be on the fence as to whether they should run.

I am not complaining or whining, I would prefer 50% of republicans over McCaulliffe. I'm just not sure anyone reading this knows what I mean.

Where did Glenn Youngkin work before he came out of nowhere? And what company does that company he works for own?

Youngkin was allowed to win against a scumbag POS democrat who was expendable to the elites, and his election served as a mere test run to see what algorithms need to be tweaked for the REAL elections coming up.

And no stupid retarded repugnicant can figure this out--or at least entertain this possibility.

My point is that they are not a reliable source for conservatives or libertarians.

They seem to favour big government when there is an actual small government guy in power and only write antigovernment columns when big government guys are in office.

Kind of like Ron Paul voting against the Republican big spending agenda when it was a safe vote to cast.

"Youngkin to date is a blank slate. But one thing he is not: Terry McAuliffe. That’s enough for me."

"Considering the alternative..."

Agree with you both...
Any non-communist is better than a communist...
Hopefully he will come out swinging for the fence w.r.t. restoring some semblance of liberty, freedom, and morality to VA...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My thoughts exactly. Youngkin isn’t even in office & people are throwing rotten eggs/tomaotes .... I’m willing to give him a chance & see what happens.

Youngkin was nothing but a handy pol who happened to come along and was forced to represent the collective attitude of a people and a culture at a specific point in time.

The guy cannot possibly aspire to the heights of the expectations bestowed on him.

Nevertheless, it’s enough that he slapped down an entire coven of Democrats.....
Sure-Thing McAuliffe, Biden the Elder, Spacey Abrams and Do-Anything-Debbie Harris.

I understand where you are coming from. Five years ago, I would have said you were crazy, but seeing what has gone on the last 5 years, your thought is possible. I’m aware how Youngkin became wealthy and the company he led is global in nature and I’m certain that the powers that be are very comfortable with him as governor. However, I do think he has a lot of integrity and wants to do the right thing - so we will have to wait and see. I make no judgement about him until we see him perform in office.

I like your comment immensely. It's measured and reasonable about Youngkin and it is enough that he slapped down a grotesque politician/cabal in every meaning of the word. He's one mere mortal person, but I do think he has integrity, but we will have to wait and see as to how he leads.

I absolutely LOVE your phrase "coven of democrats" and I will absolutely steal it. It's the best turn of words I have seen in a very long time and it brilliantly summarizes the other side. Thank you.

Youngkin to date is a blank slate. But one thing he is not: Terry McAuliffe. That’s enough for me.

Keep in mind there’s a number of people here pissed off that the Democrats didn’t steal the election like they promised over and over again would happen.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Sure, he’s not perfect, but momentum is the thing.
