Double standards on gerrymandering
LA Times ^ | Dec 29, 2021 | The Editorial Board

Posted on 12/29/2021 6:22:38 PM PST by where's_the_Outrage?

Every decade, states redraw congressional district lines (and other seats as well) to account for changes in population, as per the Constitution. Often the party in power redraws the lines to retain and expand its power in a process called “gerrymandering.”

“Gerrymandering distorts our democracy, and Democrats will enact measures to end partisan gerrymandering in federal elections,” according to the Democratic National Committee’s party platform......

“When you have a system that says we’re going to have purity in California and skulduggery in Texas, you end up with an unrepresentative chamber,” said to the Times. “We want to live in a system where neither party gets screwed. But worst of all is a system where only one party gets screwed.”

Sherman did not mention states like Maryland or Illinois, where the overwhelmingly Democratic legislatures have been drawing Republicans out of existence.

KEYWORDS: gerrymander; gerrymandering
Almost a reasonable editorial from the LA Times. They fail to mention that the DOJ is suing Texas but ignoring Maryland and Illinois gerrymandering.

IF we were a democracy I'd be worried.

Massachusetts has 9 Seats in Congress.

Five of those Reps live within 10 miles of each other. When this state had 10 Seats, 6 of the Representatives lived within 10 miles of each other.

It is all crap.

Redistricting to the party’s advantage isn’t gerrymandering in and of itself. Gerrymandering is creating ridiculous illogical indefensible districts to do so.

I think SCOTUS ruled a few years ago the redistricting is a political function and basically said they don’t want to get involved.

Oregon is just as bad as Illinois or Maryland.

Republicans win 40% of the vote in the state, but have 20% of the House of Representatives (1 out of 5) prior to redistricting.
So now with a 6th district added, the Oregon democrats have ensured a 6 to 1 advantage. (83% to 17%)
The Oregon Supreme Court and Legislature “rubber stamped” the partisan redistricting. An outfit called the Princeton Project graded Oregon democrats “an F” for partisan redistricting.

Meanwhile progressive boneheads in the Pacific Northwest gazed down South, to bitch and complain about Southerners gerrymandering their districts to their political advantage.

The West Coast urban morons have 4 pastimes.

1) Bashing Southerners, Midwesterners, and Rural Peoples.
2) Worrying about racism.
3) Worrying about sexism.
4) Worrying about environmental destruction & climate change.

These people are beyond redemption or a “road to Damascus event” to change their perspective. Only economic pain will clarify their mindset, an economic pain that could set progressive politics back a decade, if we “play our cards correctly.”

Trump 2024.
