Britain reported another day of record Covid-19 cases on Friday, with new estimates showing swathes of London’s population are carrying the virus, underlining the relentless advance of the Omicron variant.
Omicron’s rapid spread has driven a surge in cases over the last seven days, especially in the capital.
Around 1 in 20 Londoners likely had Covid-19 on Dec. 16 and early estimates - which could yet be revised - suggest this may have risen to 1 in 10 on Sunday, models from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed on Friday.

“Recorded cases” is a meaningless metric when there aren’t enough reliable tests available for testing.
You’re right. It’s nothing but fear mongering and as expected, so many fall for it.

Test positivity rate might become a bit more useful to gauge the ebb and flow of the epidemic, when test capacity gets swamped.
Some anticipate that there are also a greater percentage of asymptomatic cases with Omicron. That might effect test positivity rate as well, if more people who are getting routine screenings for work or travel start popping positive.
Omicron is more like a common cold. So this should end the pandemic. By all means, we should welcome it.

You are correct.
A heavily vaxxed nation
If Omicron “sweeps” London, who gets billed for the cleaning? A next headline could heighten — Omicron vacuums London.
God I hope so..my 16 month old nephew started getting a fever last night and a slight runny nose..my sister rapid tested him today and it was positive. How did he get it, he went to an eye doc appointment on Thursday, did he get it from some prick there who was infected and didnt know it..most likely since he hasn’t left the house in over a month..so just praying he will be OK
This is what is known as THE BIG LIE. Kind of like the report a year ago when they reported that the Bat Soup Croup had killed the same number of people as the 1918 Spanish Flu.
Having not left the house in a month is probably the problem, being a shut-in is the worst thing you can do.
and it took ONE trip to Kaiser to get his eyes checked that did the job..I still cant believe that literally that is all it took, if it was even from there
Reporting “cases” is a dubious method. It would be more informative to report how many people have died, are hospitalized or have sought monoclonal treatment.
“Cases” could include mild symptoms and no symptoms at all.
A doctor in the UK I watch, said there are only like 200 people on ventilators in the entire country of 60 million people. About the same in South Africa. He said vast majority of cases there present as common cold. And based on their data, if you have common cold symptoms, 50% chance its omicron.
Yep. The quicker people get it the quicker it goes away.
So this morning at 5 am I awoke with a sore throat, a 100.2 degree fever, and a headache. My in-laws had a rapid antigen screening test: I tested positive. If it hadn’t happened on Christmas morning, it would have been a good time to get this and get it over with. Hoping we can all get to herd immunity with this over the next 3 weeks and just be done with it (especially the masking).
(By the way, I was vaxxed with the J&J last March but not “boosted”—I guess I have the natural “boost” now of natural immunity).
I spoke with a good friend in the UK today. Triple vaxxed, always masked and still scared out of their minds. I asked how they thought this would end... and they didn’t have any ideas. It just will. Someday.
My daughter tested positive this morning, so we’ve canceled everything. Not the best time to get sick! I hope you recover quickly and without too much discomfort.
