The conviction of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter in the death of Daunte Wright was a "double injustice with dangerous implications for policing in America," especially considering the judge in the case denied her release on bail, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz says in an opinion piece Friday.
"Officer Potter, a decorated policewoman with more than two decades of service, simply did not commit a crime," Dershowitz writes in his column, published in The Hill. "Under American law, honest mistakes are not crimes — even if they result in tragic deaths."
Potter, a former suburban Minneapolis police officer, said she confused her handgun for her Taser when she killed Wright during a traffic stop. She will be sentenced in February after a jury convicted her Thursday on two counts of manslaughter.

She was denied Bail? Insane.
Correct, until you get the Marxist Lawyers involved, then the Law changes it's meaning until it's unrecognizable.
Her biggest mistake was admitting right away she meant to Taser him.
hummm, an honest cop.
You should also read the last two lines of my post #42.
False.
Quite a few have shot police officers and been found not guilty.
TX: David Wilson, who Shot and Killed Officer, Acquitted after Jury Trial
Her own superiors testified that even if she had purposely used deadly force .. it would have been Justified!
Oh, other cops excused her mistake?
Makes do difference to me.
I have mostly tried to stay out of this discussion.
The Police office made a mistake. I think she meant to use non-deadly force, but ended up using deadly force. I don’t think many people, even the officer, deny that to be the case. I agree, that she would have been justified to use deadly force, since the deceased endangered many many lives. Nobody here seem to argue that point.
Here is my basic problem. You are under the influence, and you hurt somebody in an accident you are guilty. The assumption is that it could have been avoided (even if not your fault) if you would not have been under the influence.
Lets take that to situations like this and the incidents in Minneapolis, Kenosha, and this. Why is a police officer responsible when the person tries to do bodily harm to police officers, sometimes under the influence, and fails to follow lawful commands? In my opinion, the officers are NOT responsible for injuries to persons, when the those who are breaking the law attempt to attack or endanger the officers, especially if they are under the influence.
The message has become clear, criminals are NOT responsible when they commit crimes and attack or endanger the police officers when they give lawful commands. To me, that just doesn’t make sense.
How does someone mistake a handgun for a tazer? Are the tazers not big clunky things? I don’t think she meant to kill the guy. It’s almost like she had a seizure or something. Or perhaps she was just not cut out for that kind of pressure. This just underscores the importance of not putting the cops in that kind of situation.
There are reports that Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos was speeding for a long time and distance, overtaxing his drum brakes on curves, and not using his truck's engine compression braking ability because a driver must keep speed down to use that braking.
Rogel's drum brakes overheated and failed because his driving choices violated training over a significant period of time in which he had to think about that.
Potter had maybe two seconds to realize that fellow officers had lost control of Wright.
Economically speaking, you are correct, Police are non producers, as are all Government Employees, however Rogel destroyed significant product before it got to market, resulting in a whopping loss.
Care to reconsider?
Agreed and who’s to say if even a police officer could do that, what guarantee is there that the perp gives up? Center mass shooting is designed for several reasons: first it’s the largest part of the body, second is it contains the vital organs and arteries to stop the perp and finally, if any of the vital organs are hit, the person is less likely to be able to fight back due to shock.
Keep 'em coming.
Civilians are sentenced for accidental deaths frequently
Judges rarely release murder or manslaughter convictions on bail pending sentencing
Not to say I’m not sympathetic to the woman
But these are the facts...
In the Democrat world there are crimes, and there are political crimes.
Civilians are prosecuted for accidents leading to injury or death routinely
It’s just how it is.
A mistake
Look at your text and plow into the back of minivan .....you didn’t mean to....and some dead or paralyzed kids
And you’ll likely do some pokey time
Pull your taser by accident and blast a nut bag wanted on minor charges warrants who’s bucking up
Note none of her fellow officers were ready to go weapns yet....
And you will likely be charged
I’d prefer a lesser offense like RD first degree or manslaughter 3rd
And the fact the dead boy is a shitbag is beside the point ....largely
We do not want cops determine who to execute based on criminal history....that’s ridiculous as some here propose
Who’s going to make that determination
The same police chiefs standing down on ANTIFA and ramping up against our side...?
We have laws for a reason
If she’d been convicted of homicide in the first degree, if consider it a travesty of justice. But she wasn’t.
She was convicted of first and second degree manslaughter.
From my understanding of the law, second degree manslaughter seems appropriate, first might be a reach.
But I didn’t sit through the evidence, the jury did, and I see no specific grounds for disagreeing with them.
Actually, in Democrat World there are Political Crimes, and Democrats are above the law, unless they step out of the Democrat pecking order.
Mistakes can be crimes. If I mistakenly leave a gun out and a kid uses it...I can be charged. If I mistakenly pull a trigger on my gun and kill someone I can be charged.
Shut Up Alec.......sarc
Only certain people get charged.
So she gets convicted but the cop who shot Ashli Babbit goes free.
Dersh revving up the Alec Baldwin defense.
One can make a lot of mistakes when adrenaline and reasonable fear of death take over. She should be charged with manslaughter, but there should be only a token sentence given. A month in jail and 100 hours of community service should suffice. And she should be able to keep her job. The idiocy of every law enforcement officer having to make perfect split-second decisions has to stop. Unless society is willing to accept anarchy as the norm. Not me.
2 of the Jurors were not guilty, prior to the Judge scolding the jury and sending them back for a decision.
I believe those 2 jurors will not sleep well for many years for sending the cop to prison. One was visibly breaking down and crying during the reading of verdict.
The Judge and the Prosecutors, I hope, will burn in hell for what they did. They gambled on the overcharge and won a ticket to political office in Liberal LaLa Land.
