he Kremlin has dismissed the feasibility of reviving the Soviet Union, even amid U.S. concerns and the growing nostalgia for some aspects of the former Communist system among Russians today.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary for Russian President Vladimir Putin, repudiated remarks made days two days earlier by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, who expressed "concern" to lawmakers that the Russian leader "is actually as a legacy project seeking to reconstitute the Soviet Union," especially in regard to Ukraine, which she argued Putin believed "is actually a part of Russia, belongs to Russia."
Peskov credited Nuland with having "extensive knowledge about Russia and all the nuances of the post-Soviet space." He said he was "convinced that Mrs. Nuland, just like us or other experts, clearly comprehends that restoring the USSR is impossible," as quoted by the state-run Tass Russian News Agency.
"Furthermore, Ms. Nuland surely knows that integration processes with different rates of development have appeared in the area of the former Soviet Union for quite a long time and are maturing," Peskov added. "There are the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and more top-notch integration organizations, namely the EAEU, and more advanced allied structures, such as the Union State of Russia and Belarus. None of this is an attempt at the reincarnation of the USSR, and nor can it be."

You’re wrong. The people do not think it is out of the realm of possibility that Russia will take Ukraine. You have a diaper wearing, dementia ridden president who could not tell the time of day with a prompter.
This same president gave Afghan to terrorist and left thousands of Americans behind. He allowed a bomb to kill Marines and what not mentioned is likely hundreds of Americans were killed too (they were trying to get out).
So, when you see snide comments they know that Depends Biden will likely fold like house of cards. They also feel Ukraine is not worth dying for. A corrupt cesspool.

It is well-known that Mr. Putin has always had it in his head, to return to Soviet Russia.
Their Mob will never allow it.
Putin is trying to construct a Greater Russia, comprised of the present Russian Federation + Belarus + adjacent regions (like Eastern Ukraine) with majority ethnic Russians. It’s not exactly the old Soviet Union.
The only majority ethnic Russian province in Ukraine was Crimea with 58% Russian.

Yes, I stand corrected. Replace “majority” with “substantial” (39% vs. 51%) in my post. Parts of Estonia and Latvia (but not Lithuiania) are also at risk under this scheme.

Pootey-Poot wants to keep the dream alive because he is a hard-liner, a true believe who still harbors a grudge against Boris Yeltsin for his role in allowing events to escalate such that Mikhail Gorbachev was unable to prevent the dissolution of the USSR, all the while maneuvering to position himself as first president of the new Russian Federation.
Point of fact, if Putin can figure a way to restore the USSR, ... he will.
