The standard PCR test looks for a positive measurement of 3 genes. One is the S gene and it is negative in Omicron. So the standard PCR test that finds 2 genes positive and S negative is indeed a Positive for Covid and Positive for Omicron variant of Covid.

Delta required genomic sequencing to identify. Omicron will show itself as above, but as a general thing, genomic sequencing will follow for confirmation.

The COVID-19 positive test swab (or other positive tested material such as spit) needs to be sent off for genetic sequencing. This is normally done by relatively small random sampling of COVID-19 positive tests but I’m guessing they’ll be doing 100% genetic sequencing for positive tests of people recently returned from Southern Africa or people who were exposed to recent Africa returnees or people confirmed infected with the Omicron variant.

ONLY 4 people are sick in South Africa who were vaxxed, and they all have mild symptoms. That is the ONLY function of vaccines, to reduce chances of serious symptoms. My daughter returned from S.A. today as a matter of fact, and she and her boy friend never got sick with covid there. Both are vaxxed.
