Former Rep. Lou Barletta (R) holds a wide lead in the GOP primary to be Pennsylvania’s next governor, according to a poll released this week.
The survey from Susquehanna Polling and Research showed Barletta has 27 percent support, more than four times that of his nearest Republican rival in the 2022 race.
“Since I launched my campaign, I’ve been working as hard as I can, traveling to all parts of Pennsylvania, to try to bring change to Harrisburg,” Barletta said in a statement to City & State.
“Polls don’t motivate me, my four daughters, ten grandchildren, and almost 13 million Pennsylvania residents motivate me to fix what’s wrong in the Commonwealth,” he added.
The second-highest-polled GOP primary candidate, state Sen. Scott Martin, only had 6 percent support.
However, 60 percent of respondents said they are undecided among the nine Republican primary candidates in the running early in the race.
A survey by the same company back in March showed Barletta had the highest name recognition among potential gubernatorial candidates.
Barletta served in the House from 2011 to 2019 and ran for the Senate in 2018, losing to Democratic incumbent Bob Casey.

Who is Doug? First name without last name means I don’t know who you are referring to.
I think to ask that question begs an answer that shines a light on how awful the republican party in PA truly is.
Scott Wagner should have been governor during the pandemic and a lot of the effects of Covid on the PA economy would have been much different, but the PA republican party sat on its hands for both of those campaigns. Lou Barletta should have easily marched Bob Casey out of office, but again, the PA republican party sat on its hands. In both of these cases and many others, the PA republican party has chosen to side with chamber of commerce candidates and act indifferently to populist/tea party/MAGA candidates. In a statewide race, the party does need to contribute to the success of a candidate for office. Philly and the Philly ring counties are woefully inept at best, but the party leaders there are completely uninspired to support a candidate who is too populist.
That brings us to someone like Doug Mastriano. He's probably my favorite Pennsylvanian politician (until someone throws their name in to primary Jake Corman), but he's thus far been ineffective in addressing this structural weakness and he's made enemies of the Cormans and the Chamber of Commerce patronage machine. I'd think Doug would be a more effective senator than governor now that Sean Parnell is out, but I'd also like to see Mastriano eventually lead the PA senate and gut the corrupt PA political machine from the inside.
It's all up to how the chips fall and how each candidate decides what office they'd most prefer to pursue, but I can say with relative certainty that grassroots support for each candidate is going to be the winning strategy, not support from the party.
This guy was a dud last time he ran If he wins it will simply be because any R would win.

A ‘wide lead’ when you are at 27% doesn’t really mean much.
Not in PA any longer, but I don’t remember having a good amount of attractive republicans in a line to replace the sourpuss Toomey.
I think now there are a few, Barletta, Mastriano and one other whose name I cannot remember...I think he was once a Lamb opponent, and of course he lost. That guy Lamb should be watched for hanky panky including Zuckerbucks.

If you mean competition for Trump’s endorsement, IF Mastriano pulls off his plan to pursue the last election and IF he is successful in getting the other Senators to cooperate, he will get Trump’s endorsement...firm YES.

I love Lou, but he may be too old. Of course, with the crypt keeper in the White House that might not be a factor. Doug talks a great game but hasn’t really done all that much, but to be fair he’s surrounded by RINO’s.

So where has Barletta been during all of this?
Not sure. But IIRC Barletta spoke at one or more Trump rallies during the 2016 campaign. He supported Trump, so Trump may return the favor.

As Mayor of Hazelton Barletta was anti-open boarders long before it became fashionable, even among conservatives.
Maybe they don’t hate MAGA as much as they love MOOLAH.

Even though President Trump endorsed Barletta in a Congressional election, it is different this time.
Mastriano has been superb and relentless. Amazing in a ...sad to say...republican.
