Georgia university system refuses to rename buildings, insists 'history' teaches 'important lessons'

Georgia’s public university system will not rename any of its 75 buildings with ties to slavery or racial segregation, explaining that "history can teach us important lessons."

"The purpose of history is to instruct," the Board of Regents for Georgia’s public university system wrote in a statement. "History can teach us important lessons, lessons that if understood and applied make Georgia and its people stronger."

The board voted unanimously on Monday against such changes, nearly a year after it established a committee to study the names and potential changes. The internal committee had advised that changes be made to 75 buildings on campus that are named after Confederate leaders and others.

*snip*

The announcement comes after Georgia passed a law in 2019 prohibiting state agencies from changing building names that honor a "historical entity." Many of the regents on the board for Georgia’s public university system were appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who supported the 2019 law, Fox 5 reported.

People in support of making changes to the names slammed the board following its decision Monday.

"The decision by Georgia’s Board of Regents to keep the names of known racists, segregationists and white supremacists of the state’s public colleges and universities is not surprising. It demonstrates to us the board’s support of racism and the upholding of white supremacy," a group called Rename Grady said in a statement.

How does a state secede from a city? Georgia needs to be freed from Atlanta.

Let the “triggered”(I said TRiggered) law suits commence against this blatant racism.

Well, Sherman burned Atlanta about 150 years ago. Today the inhabitants can be induced to burn their own city - no Union army needed! Just tell them there is a complete acquittal in the Ahmed Arbury case and remind them of the three black men that were butchered by Kyle Rittenhouse. Never mind it isn’t true. It serves the purpose.

Glad to see an institution that realizes that history is not yours to change, but to learn from.

Encouraging to see not all brains in this nation have
yet to turn into mush. Good for Georgia. A shame that their
prominent pimple, Atlanta, is so infected. Gives this state
a low score in the retaining history level.

Thanks, RR. A Blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Well said, but we shall see.

The people who stood up to this tyranny are people, temporal in nature. They sleep, they die, they retire, they get lazy, they change. I think of them as people scanning a dike for leaks caused by the black ocean beyond.

The forces wishing to inflict these changes is the dark ocean beyond. It doesn’t sleep. It doesn’t die. It doesn’t retire. And it doesn’t change. It is deep, dark, and malevolent, pressing, pressing, pressing, all the time, invisibly probing and poking for a human that has gone to sleep, died, retired, succumbed to laziness, or...changed.

When nobody is watching, it exploits the weakness and expands, and must be contained and beaten back.

Watching for those leaks in the dike is a daunting, tireless task.

Good for them.

The Charlottesville false flag political play was supposed to intimidate all of us to cower and give up our history.

True, but nonetheless worthy of our efforts.

Right-omitting or otherwise changing the historical record does the most harm.

I mean, ending public mention of facts you don't like means the historic lesson will finally be permanently lost or distorted (which I think, is actually the Liberals’ objective in all this).

Frankly, if I was an indigenous American, I'd want mention of my tribe and our history to never be forgotten ... so if the only way our name or history is recalled is in the name of a street or sports club... well, FINE is OK! Actually, to delete or manipulate the historic record of any group is practically THE most functional element of genocide.

Absolutely. The alternative is surrender.

Surrender means dark, black water inundating you and your loved ones in the middle of the night, killing and maiming you, or bearing you or them away never to be seen again.

A lot of parallels in that analogy to an out of control government that we need to be vigilant and watch out for.

As those who have lived under them know all too well, a tyrannical government will also just as surely inundate you and your loved ones in the middle of the night, killing and maiming you, or bearing you or them away never to be seen again.
