South Carolina Jury Find Black Man Who Confessed to Killing White Man Not Guilty of Murder
Conservative Firing Line ^ | June 1, 2021 | Chris Menahan

Devon Dontray Dunham has been found not guilty of murder in the shooting death of unarmed former volunteer fire chief Ernest Martin Stevens, 77, despite his confession and 19 witnesses taking the stand against him.

The shooting took place near Stevens’ home in Hardeeville, South Carolina on Aug 10, 2017.

According to Dunham’s lawyer, an armed Dunham “wanted a ride” from Stevens and approached him while he was sitting in his Ford F-150 in a parking lot “but felt threatened” by him and saw him “reach for something” so he decided to unload all 8 rounds of his 9 mm handgun into Stevens’ truck before running away.

Dunham struck Stevens with four bullets that hit his jaw, left arm, back and chest and fatally injured his heart and lung.

Stevens was unarmed.

Dunham initially lied to police and “denied knowing anything about the shooting” and “said he wasn’t in the city at the time” before confessing and claiming he “wasn’t trying to hurt him” when he unloaded into his car.

Dunham appears to have been acquitted because his lawyer made vague insinuations that racism may have been at play. Even though said insinuations were swiftly shut down by the judge, at least one member of the jury appears to have decided that was all they needed to hear and found him not guilty after less than 2 hours of deliberations.

“In South Carolina law, murder is ‘the killing of any person with malice aforethought, either express or implied,'” The Island Packet reported. “The prosecutors have to prove the charge ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ and all 12 jurors must agree on whether the verdict is guilty or not guilty.”

There are alternatives when the justice system no longer functions properly.

The Narrative says that white people are above the law and also get special privileges.

In reality, the opposite is largely true.

When I was young this would be fixed up.

Judges can override a jury and direct a verdict of guilty if they feel the jury ignored the evidence. I would also hold the entire jury in contempt.

That is if they’re not cowards.

I mentioned this a few times in posts but never posted it.

Where were the riots?

Oh, that's right.

Anyone familiar with SC law?

Does an honest judge have to accept this verdict?

A black, ex con, prohibited person, with an illegal gun decides he wants his reparations from this 77 yr old Cracker.

When said Cracker doesn't comply, the oppressed victim of color, fearing for his life, unloads on him.

Despite a confession, the murder weapon, with his DNA on it, multiple eyewitnesses and, I believe, video, a jury acquits this POS.

Why don't we know the make up of the jury?

A complete miscarriage of justice.

No doubt, applauded by the left.

I would be surprised if they didn't award him the truck.

This is how justice miscarries with jurors terrified that a conviction, even on overwhelming evidence, will bring the SJW crowd down on them and they will be hounded and picketed.

But, but, but, everyone has said a black man would be found guilty due to white supremacy.

Dexter?

In case you are unaware of the Showtime series Dexter, Dexter is a serial killer who works for the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter specialist. But he only kills guilty people who commit murder. Well, mostly anyway. 😋

What happened to the statements that you must flee, you can only defend yourself with the same level of threat, or if you initiate first contact you can’t defend yourself,
Then why are people still saying this about 1 case but not this case.

The killer shot an unarmed man - this isn’t about self defense any more then the animal that killed 5 and injured 45 did with his car was self defense.

should have tried him for simple homicide or negligent homicide, either of which is less difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt than murder.

Not the whole story. He was charged with murder, which in South Carolina requires “malice aforethought, either express or implied’. The prosecution couldn’t prove malice. They should have added additional charges to cover all their bases.

Prosecution should not have allowed this to be decided by jury. Some juries are unable to separate fact from ‘feelings’.

So maybe that current case in Georgia with white dad and son on trial should be ‘not guilty’ too.
