When he was a kid, Marquis Grissom Jr. would sometimes shed tears in the car on the ride home from youth baseball games.
He cried because he heard “racist comments” from white opponents — players and especially parents, he said — as he competed on the field with an all-Black youth team in Atlanta.
As the World Series plays out this weekend between the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros, the glaring lack of Black players on both teams, and MLB in general, is not lost on Grissom. The Braves and Astros each have one Black player on their World Series roster: Terrance Gore of Atlanta and Michael Brantley of Houston. Most MLB teams had two or fewer Black players, and three had none at the start of the season. About 50 percent of the league, meanwhile, is made up of Latin players.
A study released in August indicated Black players make up less than 8 percent of players in the major leagues, a telling number as baseball celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Negro Leagues in 2021. In the 1970s, the percentage of Black players was more than double what it is today.
“I definitely notice there aren’t a lot of Black players right now,” Grissom Jr. said. “You can’t help but notice.”

“True, there are a number of black Latin American players. Apparently they don’t count, for purposes of this complaint.”
Those people are all white Hispanics.
But seriously, I wonder why this is happening. I can honestly say that up North where I grew up in the 60’s/70’s, as far as fans were concerned, there was zero racism. The most beloved players on our major league baseball team were black. Kids didn’t care at all about race.
If I could play a sport, I’d play baseball, not just that it’s a good game, but you can play for a lot of years bringing the dough in and then retire with your body and mind mostly intact (well, unless you are a pitcher or catcher). Maybe it’s tough on the family - moving, dad being away for long stretches, and so on. Still, even an average player should be able to retire young.
What a stupid, stupid thread. Who gives a crap? There is so much going on around us to be discussing ratios of blacks vs whites…sheesh!
Ive read that scientists/anthropologists are very sorry that they ever “invented” races. At one time, there were exactly three “races”. The genetic differences between them are incredibly tiny.
Besides, considering that the first sentence of the article begins with the tale of Marquis Grissom Jr., born in 1967, reminiscing about his youth experience playing baseball, this story IS about 50 years ago, compared to today.
"Hispanic" was not a "race" when Grissom was born.

My guess is the other team was also all black.
You don’t see hardly any Hispanics in football or basketball. It has to do with body type and the ability to hit a 95+ mph pitch in baseball which very few of any race can do. Or throw a baseball 95+ mph.
Blacks are more successful in football and basketball because their raw athletic ability is much more of an advantage in those sports than in baseball.
Well here's an "All Black" Team...
Waiting on the lack of white players in the nba story. ....Omg, i gotta go change clothes now from the coffee that just came out my nose.
An imbecilic rationale. I am now going to take Mark Twain’s advice concerning “arguing with a fool”.
Have a pleasant evening.
Actually there are more and more White players from Europe now on NBA rosters.
I’m here all week! Try the fish! 😜😜
Yeah, and the lack of blacks (LOWER CASE, THANK YOU!!) in NBA and NFL….shocking.
And sure sign of racism.
The problem is not racism. The ‘problem’ is black athletes making a rational business decision — sometimes before they leave high school. Which sport should I play? Where can I make the most money over the longest possible career? Baseball takes the longest development time on average and there’s no guarantee of ever making the Majors. And if you do, there’s no guarantee that you’ll stick around long. But, heck, journeymen NBA players make great bucks, and stars like Carmelo and Vince Carter played a long time after they were on the down-slide.
So what?
Far more lucrative being in a "gang" and selling drugs and carjacking high end cars.
Technically, I would suppose so. Your are getting into the high weeds though.
You must understand that the vast majority of people DO consider Hispanic/Latino to be a race rather than a simple ethnicity.
My initial assertion was accurate and in response to EEGator’s stupid comment: “ Many American blacks are too stupid to know that Hispanic is an ethnicity and not a race.” The “stupid black’s” he is referring to are technically correct and he is not.
You may argue the legitimacy of that belief in good faith but right or wrong one would find themselves in the distinct minority.
BS. Plenty of black Hispanics in baseball. Should we lament the absence of whites in the NFL and NBA? Sports are a meritocracy.
You are confusing the father with the son. Marquis Grissom Sr. was born in 1967 and had a very successful major league career. According to Baseball Reference he earned over $50 million and needs nobody’s pity. The son Marquis Jr. is the son who currently plays for GA Tech. No doubt the son would like to match or exceed his father’s success and hopes the skills are genetic. I distrust NBC’s portrayal of this kid as racially discriminated and they no doubt went out of their way to create a racial problem where it doesn’t exist.
Majority opinion doesn’t dictate science.
Look up race in an Anthropology text.
Forensic scientists can determine race from skeletal remains.
Have fun living the Cuck Life.
P.S. Make sure you kneel tomorrow.
Face it, "Hispanic" was a political construct in 1970 by President Richard Nixon.
