So, if Manchin switches to Independent but would still caucus with the DEMs, how does that change anything?

Republican Sen. Mike Lee said he ‘absolutely’ thinks Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin should switch parties on ‘Sunday Night in America’ Manchin isn't an idiot. He knows that if he switches to the Republicans he gets primaried out in 2024. If he stays with the Democrats he has a chance of reelection. A dwindling chance but still a chance.

Why leave a party where you control the agenda with your vote to become just one of 5-6 other squish “moderates”?

Manchin was huddling with Biden & Schumer over the weekend. They were probably threshing out a deal while Biden alternated between nappy-time and ice cream snacks.
My gut tells me that Manchin is about to flip.

The reason to change, is that he would tip the balance of power to the Republicans if he cacused with Republicans.
He could get some nice committee chairmanships, among other benefits, if he switched. GOP would have to make him some offers. And if they didn’t follow thru, Manchin could always threaten to go back, and give Democrats control of the Senate again.

I think the time for Manchin to flip would be after the 2022 election when he is safe for 6 years. Flipping now, he gains very little. If after the election the senate is still evenly divided he is in a position to bargain with the Republican-leaders. Depending what they offer him, he might flip then.

"Manchin isn't an idiot. He knows that if he switches to the Republicans he gets primaried out in 2024. If he stays with the Democrats he has a chance of reelection. A dwindling chance but still a chance." With all due respect to your view, that looks to be backwards.
If Manchin runs for reelection as a dem, he doesn't have much chance at getting reelected against an R; on the other hand if he flips to R, he beats anything the Dems have on the bench.

Right now Manchin is the most powerful man in the Senate, in Congress and in Washington. No part of the president's agenda will be accomplished without his say-so, and he can extract enormous concessions from the Democrats this way. If he switches to the GOP, he just becomes another never-Trumper liberal Republican in a crowd of them. He'd have to be an idiot to switch.
To: CatOwner
Dems will have zero control over him.
He can vote against them whenever he wants and he will win his next elections by a bigger margin.
To: DoodleDawg
As a democrat he wields power and invites to the Whitehouse.
To: RatRipper
I don’t see how any self-respecting human being could be a Democrat.
Well, first you'd have to lose your sense of self respect.
Seems to be a common theme amongst the Uniparty these days...

To: RatRipper
They can’t, thats why all the self respecting people are conservatives
