OAKLAND (CBS SF) — A decorated, retired Oakland police captain, Ersie Joyner, was shot in an robbery attempt Thursday afternoon at gas station off Interstate 980 in Oakland.
Ersie Joyner was at Highland Hospital being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, Alameda County Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly confirmed to KPIX. A law enforcement source confirmed that Joyner was out of surgery and recovering in the ICU at Highland Hospital after being shot six times.
From start to finish, the incident lasted less than a minute.
Surveillance video shows Joyner pumping gas when three men rush him from a vehicle on the other side of the pump. One suspect grabs the cellphone Joyner was holding and other suspect appear to be digging in Joyner’s pockets, then pulls a chain off his neck. Joyner does not struggle with the men but, as the suspects open Joyner’s car’s doors and one appears to take his backpack, Joyner pulls out a pistol and opens fire.
The video shows Joyner shooting and killing one suspect who died at the scene, while two others fled in a black Nissan sedan.
Joyner served with the Oakland police department for 28 years. Currently, Joyner is a security consultant for several cannabis businesses in Oakland. Investigators believe it was a targeted attack.

Interesting, MJ is a Sched 1 controlled substance federally. So is possession of arms ( whether we like either fact or not).
So, A guy, privileged as he is regarding carry of arms in CA due to a LE career, uses a gun to defend himself because he is targeted by MJ competitors in a business model which sells MJ in violation of federal law but within state law.
Does anyone else see how this has created a condition where one regulated system is leveraging another?
If a non-MJ state had this happen, the retired cop would in the same category as the thugs whom assaulted him, just another bad actor shooting other bad actors over an illegal practice....
Insane are running the nuthouse.
That made my day.
Must be game-day. He’s got his uniform on.
The discrepancy between legality at the State level, and illegality at the Federal level opens the door to selective law enforcement...a tool with great potential for tyrannical abuse. Think firearms rights.
Thank you.
Isn't it hypocritical to demonize legal weed and accept alcohol?
FR’s been inundated with libertarian creeps. Don’t try to educate those fools. I’ve tried to talk to addicts about their habit. Waste of breath/time.
Black police officer killing black thugs ok white cop killing thugs not
My brother’s friend was surrounded by several ‘youths’ as well, and started shooting. Blew out one of their knees. He got in big trouble because... well, he had the gun, and it was 4 or 5 @$$#0/es’ word against his.
Like Bernard Goetz, he shoulda just turned his back, went home, and said nothing.
I also worked with a guy who took out 3 robbers in similar fashion. 1 was killed, 1 probably didn’t survive the hospital stay, 1 ran away. My coworker just walked away. , This happened in another country. The expectations for that country were probably what I would expect today after seeing these stories come across.
Just walk away.
This victim really blew it when he left is defensive position, leaving him wide open to being shot up. And that’s exactly what happened.
Denny Crane.😁
So, did he get his charges lowered after recovering?
