Colin Powell Was Nearly the Future of the GOP Before Trump (Bwahahahaha)

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who sadly passed away from COVID complications, will be remembered for many accomplishments and failings. His legacy will have detractors on the right (he was a sellout who endorsed Obama) and the left (he misled us about WMDs), but I can’t help thinking what if he had been the future of the Republican Party?

Counterfactuals are always messy, but bear with me. There is reason to believe that Powell was Ronald Reagan’s vision of the Republican Party’s bright future. And Powell might well have defeated Bill Clinton in 1996. That would have made Powell America’s first Black president. Assuming re-election, he would have been president when 9/11 happened. Everything thereafter would, likely, have been very different.

And, of course, it’s hard to imagine a starker contrast than what eventually happened to America (and the GOP): President Donald J. Trump.

This actually could have happened. Fourteen months before the 1996 presidential election, a Time/CNN poll found that “If the 1996 presidential election were held today, Colin Powell, running on the GOP ticket, would beat Bill Clinton 46 percent to 38 percent…”

This writer is very naive.

If Powell had been nominated in '96, he would have been called all the same epithets that Bush and Romney and Trump were. He would have been called a token and an oreo and a traitor to his race, the same as they do to Clarence Thomas.

I remember the election of '96 and was elated when Powell decided not to run because I knew then that he was a liberal republican and would be no good.

The left always remembers dead republicans fondly, especially backstabbing dead republicans.

Colin Powell took out the establishment’s dirty dagger and stabbed Republicans in the back. He shall not be missed by me.

I remember it as well. I agree it would likely have ended badly, but I think, as I did at the time, that he would have had a fair chance of beating Clinton. Certainly a greater chance than Bob Dole. Good old “next guy in line” GOP politics. The next time it happened, in 2008, Powell was happy to put the shiv right in his “good friend” John McCain’s back

I agree with you on the left coming against Powell with venom if he had been the GOP nominee.

I hate to hear of his passing today. Even more than that, I hated to see him dwindle in character over the years. Long before we had the term "man crush" it was easy to respect him as the general in charge of Operation Desert Storm. I recall the media hating the so-called "Powell Doctrine" of using disproportionate force against your military enemy to hurry up and win the war.

His testosterone levels seem to decline as he got into politics.

If somehow, Colin Powell were elected as POTUS, you can bet he would have acted the same way Michael Steele did when he became the national Chairman of the GOP.

Colin, like Mike Steele would have been a TOTAL RINO or Assistant Democrat, apologizing for all the Republican Party stands for. “I am appalled, disgusted and fully ashamed of my Party’s history in relationship with black voters!”

Right. John McCain was just too conservative for him. That tells you how liberal Powell was.

It was Alma. She was worried about his safety. It was really an indictment of the US on her part. No guarantee he could have taken down BJ and it wasn’t worth the effort. He would have had to stand up to the Belafonte’s for calling him a house slave/Uncle Tom. He didn’t. He’s no Clarence Thomas.

I wrote Kemp-Powell ‘96 in the dirt on the pickup window right after Clinton took office. But they nominated another upside-down ticket.

Whatever respect I had for Colin Powell in the past, was completely destroyed by his endorsement of Obama and then Biden.

He chose to endorse the black candidate, rather than the more qualified and experienced candidate. He chose the color of the candidate's skin rather than what the country really needed. He chose the candidate he thought would make history by becoming the first black president.

Powell betrayed whatever principles he had in the past, and he betrayed the party that he purportedly was a member of, or the republicans. If you can give up your principles so easily, then, you don't deserve any respect at all, and whatever legacy Powell had built, was eroded by his decisions in later life.

Wonder how Mitt feels about that? And McCain too before he passed?

If Colin was really a RINO Republican, why wouldn’t he have voted for those King RINOs?

“Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who sadly passed away from COVID complications,”

his family noted that he’d already been double vaccinated.

FAT LOT OF GOOD THAT DID HIM! RIP!
