Lake Tahoe water level plummets, stranding fish and drying docks
NY Post ^ | 10/18/2021 | Jesse O’Neill

Lake Tahoe is in “terminal” condition as the water level in the sixth largest lake in the US fell below its natural rim, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center reportedly said Tuesday that the lake’s water level sunk six days earlier than expected, meaning the lake is no longer flowing to its tributaries.

The terminal, or endorheic condition, could prevent salmon from spawning in the Truckee River, and other water sources connected to the freshwater lake that straddles the border between California and Nevada, according to the report.

Build communities in the desert, then act shocked when water resources are exhausted.

Sometimes I wonder how we have survived this long.

I’m not saying it’s not concerning but this is not the first time the lake has dropped below it’s rim during drought. It snowed overnight, and a series of storms is expected starting Wednesday into early next week. We’ll see but with a weaker La Nina we have a basis to be hopeful precipitation may be closer to average this year

They have a dam at the outlet, to regulate flow I assume.

"...lake’s water level sunk six days earlier than expected,..."

BS!
Six whole days!
OTOH, I think it happens (normally) almost every year...

More likely it’s the fault of Global Warming. Oops! I meant Climate Change. Now that Trump is out of office, everything bad is due to Climate Change.

For example, I can’t find my car keys. Climate Change strikes again!

I thought it said “...stranding fishes and drying ducks,” which actually would have made sense.

Yes. Lake is below the outlet level. Natural rim is 6,223 elevation. Currently it is 6,220 elevation.

Yes and the average depth is 1000’ with the deepest known depth about 1600’.

This happens all the time.

Or build cities under sea level in an area that historically gets bad hurricanes and wonder why it floods.

We have a week of rain forecast in California with snow in the Sierra. We got the first taste of it last night, but Wednesday to next Tuesday we’re supposed to get rain every day.

I live in N Nevada.

I have been here over 16 years.

This is NOT the first time the lake has gone below ‘outflow’ level.

Water from Lake Tahoe flows into the Truckee River, which then flows into Pyramid Lake & Lake Lahotan. Irrigation is taken out of Lake Lahotan. Lake is currently very low=no outflow.
