ST. PETER, Minn. (AP) — A private college in Minnesota has renamed its arboretum that honored an 18th-century Swedish botanist who has been criticized for classifying humans in a way now seen as racist, school officials said Tuesday.
The popular greenspace at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, located about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of the Twin Cities, has been known as the “Linnaeus Arboretum” since 1988. It recognized Carl Linnaeus, who popularized a system of classifying living things and divided them into the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms.
Recently, though, Linnaeus has been criticized for his 18th century book “Systema Naturae,” in which he classified four varieties of human, largely based on skin color and geography, which became the basis for scientific racism.
“Gustavus has historically sought to build an inclusive and just community,” said Scott Anderson, chairman of the college’s board of trustees. “In recent years, and especially since George Floyd’s murder, we have strengthened our efforts to pay attention to underrepresented voices and discovered how painful Linnaeus’ name and legacy are for some of our students and visitors.”

This should be a disaster. All the classifications are in Latin. Some are in Greek most notably, ophtahlmology.
Discussing botany with someone from Japan or India is possible because although the languages may be a hinderance, the Latin is not.

Not only was it written during the Second Great Awakening when European Christians, especially Protestant Anglos in England and the U.S. were pushing heavily for abolition. (To which they were successful in England before his book, then in the U.S. after his book.) But it has detail on things like his observance that red ants use black ants as slaves and that the red ant colonies might cease to exist without their slaves (pushing to keep black folks in their place as he saw it). And to those who didn't connect the dots, he wrote a sequel titled The Descent of Man. In that he fully connects the dots between natural selection and keeping blacks at a subhuman level.
This was "scientific racism" in the 19th century, was the argument in the 20th century for segregation, and is basically the holy book of the atheist left today and the basis for us having to teach our kids in schools that we all go here through natural selection.
Martin Luther King was a notorious womanizer and simply used them for his pleasure. We need to tear down his statues and memorials and to get rid of his birthday as a holiday. I’m woke now!
I guess we can keep all the street names as they serve as warnings.

But here’s the thing. The Left will only destroy those folks who are not on their approved list.
Hillary Clinton was once strongly against gay marriage. But Hillary is on the approved list. So she gets a pass.
Senator Robert Byrd was not just in the Klan. He was a high Klan official. But Byrd is on the approved list. So he gets a pass.
Martin Luther King once declared that homosexuality was a mental disorder. But MLK is on the approved list. So he gets a pass.

The University is not wrong about Carl Linnaeus. What the guy proposed about human beings wasn’t just goofy. It was downright toxic.
That people his toxic taxonomy and theories develop from it seriously has done tremendous disservice to humanity.
