Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, both based in Texas, said Tuesday that they will continue plans to require employees to get vaccinated, despite an edict issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that would ban vaccine mandates for private businesses in the state.
"Federal action supersedes any state mandate or law, and we would be expected to comply with the President's Order to remain compliant as a federal contractor," Southwest said in a statement to POLITICO, referencing the Biden administration's requirement that government contractors be vaccinated by Dec. 8.
"We will continue to follow all orders closely and keep our employees updated on any potential changes to existing policies," a spokesperson said, adding the airline is in the process of "reviewing all guidance issued on the vaccine."
Abbott on Monday signed a sweeping order effectively banning vaccine mandates for private businesses with 100 or more employees. Last month, the Biden administration said it will require that businesses with 100 employees or more must mandate vaccines or receive weekly Covid tests.
American Airlines said it's also reviewing Abbott's order and that so far airline officials "believe the federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state laws, and this does not change anything for American."
White House press secretary Jen Psaki called the federal mandates' legal mandate "unquestionable," and said Abbott is just playing politics.

There is an EO for federal employees and those contracting with them.
No.
I just read this on The Liberty Daily https://beckernews.com/we-are-not-going-to-fire-any-employees-over-this-southwest-ceo-comes-out-in-opposition-to-biden-vaccine-mandate-42505/
This is what happens when you an empty promise. I see and hear Abbott say alot of things about covid, the boarder...ext. But not of it ever accomplishes anything. What ever happened to all those haitians on the boarder? This is just more of the same.
Like FREE to them...but u and I pay!!
All part of the plan. Massive disruption of operations in the govt (eg Air Traffic Controllers) and contractors. Grind DoD technology development to a halt. Decimate military headcount.
All brought to you by the geniuses who architected the Afghan pullout. (They are not dumb or incompetent)
Our enemies could not have done a better job of undermining the country.

boxlunch :" There is no federal order. There is only a press release! "
Quite True !
There is no ruling about mandatory *vaxxine* in the workplace, until it is approved by OSHA
and introduced and printed into the Federal Register
It is just hearsay, proposed - it is nothing but a puff pastry of 'cream of crap' and political posturing.
Print it out, and then see the lawsuits fly ! and then 'Schleppy Joe' will go off for another 'lid'.
You left out SW’s free baggage and free changes, both yuge plusses for me.
There is no OSHA mandate. Don’t these corporate idiots read anything for themselves?
SWA employee of 10 plus years here: It looks like the Company is going to be very liberal in religious accomodations from what I hear.
We are required as a federal contractor to abide by the POS’s order which is NOT his OSHA EO.
Don’t give up on us yet...
I appreciate not having to pay for check-in bags. What’s better? Jet Blue?
Is Virgin America still around? They had purple lighting.
I’m in my 30s. I flew a lot more as a child and had relatives overseas.. By the time I did so, legendary airlines like “Pan-Am” were out of business. But TWA, Northwest, Continental, US Airways still existed...
I just remember air travel being so much better back then(?) Sure the food was bad but I liked the airplane food + snacks every flight. Now it’s just snacks and drinks if that. And you usually have to pay extra for some awful sandwich. Unless first class.
International airlines remain much better.
“Southwest, American airlines workers will have to get vaccinated, despite Texas order”
Uh, no...they don’t HAVE to.
There is a an Executive Order for the federal contractor vax mandate: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/09/09/executive-order-on-ensuring-adequate-covid-safety-protocols-for-federal-contractors/
There is no OSHA rule for private employers of 100+ yet—that’s the one that’s just a press release at the moment.
SHUT THEM DOWN!
These brave workers are the leaders of America showing the way.
America can use a lot more like them.
Rumors I hear is that American Airlines will feel the backlash soon.
Why don’t these companies just grant exemptions for any employee who requests one? If the gov’t doesnt like it, force it to come in and make the call on every individual who wants an exemption. Cloward-Piven the whole damned thing. Why are these companies being good little Nazis when they don’t have to be?
Governor Abbott is gonna have to stop talking and start acting.
Republicans have a _lot_ of trouble doing that—we will see if the governor is ready to play real hardball.
Federal order doesn’t exist. And it won’t until OSHA has done it’s Buck Fiden desired job and written the order.
