Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, both based in Texas, said Tuesday that they will continue plans to require employees to get vaccinated, despite an edict issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that would ban vaccine mandates for private businesses in the state.
"Federal action supersedes any state mandate or law, and we would be expected to comply with the President's Order to remain compliant as a federal contractor," Southwest said in a statement to POLITICO, referencing the Biden administration's requirement that government contractors be vaccinated by Dec. 8.
"We will continue to follow all orders closely and keep our employees updated on any potential changes to existing policies," a spokesperson said, adding the airline is in the process of "reviewing all guidance issued on the vaccine."
Abbott on Monday signed a sweeping order effectively banning vaccine mandates for private businesses with 100 or more employees. Last month, the Biden administration said it will require that businesses with 100 employees or more must mandate vaccines or receive weekly Covid tests.
American Airlines said it's also reviewing Abbott's order and that so far airline officials "believe the federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state laws, and this does not change anything for American."
White House press secretary Jen Psaki called the federal mandates' legal mandate "unquestionable," and said Abbott is just playing politics.

There is no federal order. There is only a press release!
Is the federal mandate properly registered?
“...as a federal contractor...”

How is it that they classify themselves that way?

When a Dictator gives an order it must be carried out but who is the Dictator
Perhaps they have contracts with the federal government to move people and freight on their planes?
I’m glad Southwest is doing this. My husband loves Southwest, I hate it. I want tv screens and assigned seats. We have been forced to fly other airlines and he is starting to enjoy the perks. This will finally put him over the edge. We’re flying in a few days and couldn’t get Southwest tickets. Haha. Now he’s glad we’re not flying SW. Bye Bye stupid seating system, uncomfortable seats and unprofessional comedy routine flight attendants.
This!
Eff Southwest for siding with the DC Junta dictatorship.
Because government employees fly the airline and they probably get a preferred rate. At least that is the way I see it.
Because they fly Federal employees around on business.
If you so much as sell the Feds a paperclip, you’re a Federal Contractor.
Texas bump for later...
“The eight airlines with Government contracts are – American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.”
Keep pushing azzholes. See what you get.
I’d walk now before I fly SW. Gave up on amrrican a very long time ago.
In matters of opinion bend like a willow. In matters of principle stand like the Rock of Gibraltar. This is now a matter of principle.
Refuse. Resist. Solidarity.
They haul troops and feral employees.
It doesn’t take much to be classified as a feral contractor. You take their money and they own you.
I won’t so much as let them buy a roll or barbed wire for my place in Ag support payments. Goes against my grain in the first place and too many strings in the second.
Resist, we much.
I think Herb Kelleher would have told the feds to go fly a kite.
Plenty of businesses that are not federal contractors will gladly hire their employees.
Every federal employer is staring into a deep, black hole of not being able to find enough employees.
That is death for any contractor that lives on cost plus contracts.
