Noem Draws Bipartisan Ire For Demanding South Dakotans Celebrate ‘Native American Heritage’ Instead of Columbus Day

Republican Governor of South Dakota Kristi Noem has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum on Sunday for telling state residents “don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage” in an official statement. Noem only referred to October 11 as Native Americans’ Day, and omitted any reference to the date’s long national significance as Columbus Day.

“The second Monday in October has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1968. In 1990, South Dakota was the first state to do things a little differently than the rest of the nation,” Noem said. “In South Dakota, we recognize Monday, October 11th, as Native Americans’ Day. We recognize that the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people and their culture is part of who we are collectively as South Dakotans. We recognize them traditionally as the O’ceti Sakowin meaning the Seven Council Fires — more commonly known throughout the world as the Great Sioux Nation.”

The statement continued, “In 1990, Governor George S. Mickelson lead the ‘Year of Reconciliation.’ It’s been my goal in public office to continue that mission of recognizing and respecting the nine tribal nations that share our geography. It is my goal to come to the table with tribal leaders to support tribal communities, businesses, and families.”

“This holiday weekend, I encourage every South Dakotan to reach into their own community to support Native-owned businesses, learn more about the local Native American culture, and recognize the shared values we have as South Dakotans,” Noem concluded. “Don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage.”

Noem’s tweet about the statement struggled to find support from either side of the aisle.

Thanks Governor for making time to celebrate Native American heritage in the midst of Corey Lewandowski affair and daughter's real estate license/nepotism scandals

This, from the governor who wants to delete Native History from the curriculum.

She’s a lot more conservative than Trump. There isn’t much comparison there.

Bump Stock ban vs signing Constitutional Carry into law.

Noem wins on that alone.

Race/ethnicity pandering is disgusting—no matter who does it.

Acknowledging the fact that quite a bit of her State has reservations on it... Not pandering. Especially when other governors have been following suite for 40 years...

Notice, SD is one of the few States where the indigenous folks aren’t being complete assholes.

Gee... I wonder why that is? I’ll give you a bit to ponder that.

When you pander to one group you are attacking all other groups that are not in the Pander Pantheon.

It is a horrible way to do politics—dividing people instead of uniting them.

True leaders have no business going there.

You seem more dialed into the Noem thing than I have been...which has been little until now. Help me out. My gut says that there is a lot more going on here than meets the eye. I feel like it’s that same thing that happened to Sarah Palin, except this time it’s being perpetrated by our own side. The slams against Noem seem too pat, too convenient. I admit I’m fighting against the stream here and may be totally wrong. But I feel like the mob has gotten liquored up by the cattle baron and convinced them to lynch the woman without a trial (hearing all the facts).

“Pudding.”

“How dare you not mention jello. What are you, some kind of divisive jerk or something?”

True leaders lead. Now get the hell out of the way while the Adults are getting things done.

Yep. Started with the Tranny bill. 4 provisions. 2 of which would have been shot down by SD Courts because they violate different parts of the SD Constitution.

Noem told the GOP to fix it or she wouldn’t pass the bill. They ignored her. So, she vetoed it and used EO’s to “patch” it to keep tranny’s from messing with girls sports while putting the onus back on the legislature to fix their stupid bill.

As you can imagine, feelings were hurt. It also generated a great opportunity for left-wing agigtators and GOPe lick-spittles to come along and stab Noem in the back.

Repeatedly.

She’s kept taxes low, didn’t fall in for all of the vax/mask mandates, passed Constitutional carry into law, is working on stand your ground, is pro-fee markets, pro-private property...

The GOPe can’t have that. Gotta toe the line.
The Left can’t have that. A conservative success story? No... gotta come up with something, even if it’s “fake news”.

“doesn’t suck up to the Romney/Cheney GOPe, etc..”

So why did she have a fundraiser for Boehner a few months ago? You can’t get any more GOPe than that whining, sniveling ahole.

“Columbus day was never about anyone’s culture. It was about intrepid explorers.”

That’s how it was taught in the ‘50s and ‘60s when I was going to school in NYS. Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria and brave Columbus. Although I love Americans with Italian heritage — even the Mafia is better than Democrats — for us Columbus Day never was about Italian culture.

She didn’t. That is another lie.

Yes. Really.

Do you want the truth? Or are you just here to spew what you heard someone else say?

Google Representative Dusty Johnson. He’s the one that invited Boehner.

You are entitled to your opinion.

However, I do not remember getting the Muppet News Flash stating that you were made the final arbiter of such things.

Congrats on the promotion.

All a Republican politician needs to do to be successful is, first, do no harm. Just shut up, say nothing, and quietly go about cutting taxes if nothing else. It is difficult to find any politician with whom one can agree 100%. But if you’re a ‘tard like most of the RINOs, at least focus on one good thing. Cut regulations for instance. Do one positive thing and keep your yap shut.

Problem is the Deep State is capable of generating a crisis that sabotages that kind of Presidency, see COVID. Any Democrat will tell you Trump was cruising to re-election before COVID hit. It was like Manna from Heaven for the Democrats and Republican Never Trumpers.

Great post--you nailed it.

The Kiss principal--Keep It Simple Stupid

Many Republicans are so stupid that can't even master that simple rule.
