Facebook is down, and not in a minor way. The Big Tech mammoth is down worldwide in a way in which they will not be able to easily recover as the DNS A and AAA records have been deleted. Technically speaking, facebook.com is now for sale.

They’re not alone. Instagram, WhatsApp, and others have also been affected in the same way. It’s clearly a coordinated attack on a massive scale, though it’s unclear how it was pulled off. We’re not talking about a simple DDoS attack. This is catastrophic and would have required high-level access to certain protocols that one cannot get from the outside.

So, someone deleted large sections of the routing....that doesn’t mean Facebook is just down, from the looks of it....that means Facebook is GONE

What I'm reading is that the issue is related to Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Which is a level beyond DNS. I'm not familiar with it. But the BGP issue is causing all of their DNS to fail which causes all of their apps to fail.

They are having trouble getting into their own facilities because their own apps control their smart-card access...and those are down.

Whoops....They should just drive over to Zuck's house where he can simply grab a good ole fashioned metal key out of his safe right? Maybe they're waiting for the dude to get back with the key.

The DNS lost angle is techno-baloney. DNS part is working, in fact FB runs its own nameservers. Separately, FB domain name registration doesn’t expire until 2030.

Whatever is going on, is the typical “too many moving parts under the hood, and something got mixed up.”

Do you know what a border gateway router is?   That is the network of routers across the world that directs data packets from the origin to the destination.   The outage has been caused by all of the routes that Facebook uses suddenly deleted from the network.   Therefore, the Facebook origin servers naming is useless if all the Gateway Routers at Verizon, AT&T, Level 3, etc., don't know how to deliver the data packets.

I was once one of those Verizon Techs before I retired.   We had bays and bays of Border Gateway Routers at the South East Regional Junction facility.

I don’t do Facebook, but I’ve been trying to access a local runner’s shop and it’s down. Lots of small businesses advertise there.

Learning on the fly, so "no," this part is new technlogy to me.

In addition to directing the data, the DNS part is hosed too - and that would happen if all data packets (including DNS requests) can't get to the authoritative DNS nameserver - and FB is its own authority for that.
