Almost one-third of all working-age men in America aren’t doing diddly-squat. They don’t have a job, and they aren’t looking for one either. One-third of all working-age men. That’s almost 30 million people!
How do they live? What are they doing for money? To me, this is one of the great mysteries of our time.
I’m certainly not the first person to make note of this shocking statistic. You’ve heard people bemoaning this "labor participation rate," which is simply the number of working-age men (usually counted as ages 16 to 64) who are working or are seeking work, as a percentage of the overall labor force.

The age range is between 16-64....a bit of hyperbole by yahoo trying to get hits.
Good article—goes in depth on this topic.
Government has rewarded some activities and punished others..with both taxes and regulation (federal, state, local) that makes “not working” a reasonable choice for many...

I think most of those 30 million have asked me for money on the street here in New York City.
Cash under the table ends with with digital currency.
According to the author:
1. Unemployment insurance
2. Early retirement, pensions, disability and lawsuits
3. Savings, trading stocks, and bitcoin
4. Working for cash, aka the under-the-table economy
5. Living off family members
6. Illegal work
7. Living off the land
Government has declared war on the working people in America. Biden says they must pay their fair share, to reward the new democrat voters who have just crossed the border.
IOW, not sure working it for the man.
Many work off the books of course. No payroll taxes; no employer portion of payroll taxes. No SDI, no workers comp insurance, no SS tax etc. Some are self employed doing odd jobs for cash. All cash business, non-reporting, on paper you look poor so you get benefits.
This is one of the reasons they want to snoop in on bank accounts with $600 or more. Same reason some states have cracked down on ‘gig workers’ even though they argued it as if they were doing uber drivers, piano players and independent writers a favor. Next they will go after various other independent operators like beauticians. They usually just rent space and get paid a lot in cash by their clients. Industries like that will be in the crosshairs soon enough. The $600 bank account thing is a blanket way to snoop in on everyone without having to target industries one by one.
How many are earning unreported income?
I never give $ to panhandlers except once. I gave a dollar to a guy who had a sign that said “No Lies Want Beer”. The one honest panhandler.
I’m amazed at the fact that currently ALL panhandlers are disabled vets now. At least that’s what their signs say.
Wow! My 68 year old husband officially retired at 65. He couldn’t deal with “free” time. 2 years ago he started working part time for FedEx. He averages 55 hours a week.
I’d rather have a few people get away with unreported income than the IRS being even more intrusive. Liberals are totalitarian monster.
1 -- I plan to retire early myself in a few years (if before I turn 60 counts as "early"). So I'll be part of the 16-64 not working. I don't know why he stopped at 64 instead of, say, 60 or 62 (ages to collect SS).
2 -- I wonder how many of these 16-64 aged non-working men are illegal aliens? I'm sure there's TONS of under-the-table pay in that segment alone.
It’s called “Cash Business”! Jeez!
Sittin on the front porch playin the harmonica.
I’ve known a lot of people - and hired a few - who demand payment in cash. They are usually self-employed handyman types who can do a little plumbing, painting, minor electrical work, carpentry, and gardening or yard work.
