Idaho: Backpacker Uses .45 to Stop Attacking Moose

On June 21, 2021, a bull moose repeatedly charged an Idaho backpacker and his dog, who had set up camp at Harrison Lake, a pristine wilderness site, about a 4.6 mile hike from the trailhead.  Harrison lake is a near oval mountain lake with one outlet, known as pack river.  From spokesman.com:

The moose tore apart the campsite and charged at the camper and his dog. The camper hid behind a tree, but the moose did not stop charging. The camper discharged a firearm at the moose in self-defense from close range, according to the release. Fish and Game responded to the incident and located the deceased moose.

The Forest Service has closed the Harrison Lake trailhead to hikers to prevent possible conflicts between hikers and any bears that may feed on the carcass. The trailhead will be closed for a week.

It’s unclear whether the dog was leashed or not but it was in the man’s camp, IDFG spokeswoman Kara Campbell said. A .45 caliber handgun was used, Campbell said.

Attacks by moose are rare in the lower 48 states because moose are not common.

In Alaska, attacks by moose against humans are more common than attacks against humans by bears. However, more people are killed by attacking bears than by attacking moose. There are about six times as many moose in Alaska as grizzly bears, and about twice as many moose as black bears.

He used the .45 to stop attacking the moose? I’m sure the moose appreciated that.

Poor moose, it only wanted to bite the backpacker’s sister.

I bet the moose was under the spell of a witch.
How does one tell if a woman is a witch?

And now they are very slightly less common than they just were.

…but better shoot from behind a tree and wait for the moose to retreat and bleed out before exposing yourself.

Was she carving her initials on the moose with the sharpened end of an interspace tooth brush?

Always carry a first-aid kit. Moose bites can be nasty

For the uneducated, herbivore means safe. Yet if you look at real records, you find that this is a false premise. In Africa, Elephants, Hippos and Cape Buffalo are all considered extremely dangerous. Here in N.America, most herbivore deaths come on the farm & ranch but encounters like this show that Nature does not need claws or teeth to be dangerous!

Would a .45 stop a moose? I have .45’s, but never shot a moose.

The story neglects any mention of an underwear change...

I know a guy - a TOUGH guy - who told me a story one morning...

He had been hiking on a trail near the Big Sky Resort (Montana) at 9:30 PM one summer evening (plenty of daylight at that time of year) and noticed a young moose on his left.

He said: “Uh-O. I knew the momma moose was near by. I turned my head to see behind me and the moose was charging me! I started running then (he had a cotton hoodie tied around his neck) I could hear her right behind me and I tossed my sweatshirt and it covered her face and eyes.”

So he ran a few yards and scrambled up a tree, only coming down after 2:00 AM. Seems the moose could smell his presence but couldn’t see him but stomped around for almost two hours trying to find him. He was still shaking when he told me the story the next morning.

Oddly, I realize I should have asked him if he had needed a shorts change...

I’d want a Smith and Wesson 500 magnum.

If you’re counting on a tree to keep you and the moose apart, a head-shot is probably going to be your best bet. And a .45 is plenty for that.
