Law enforcement is probably the only endeavor where lying is not only permitted and sanctioned, but it is encouraged. As a direct consequence one should ALWAYS assume that they are lying until verified otherwise.

Where has Alan Dershowitz been? When was the last time the FBI actually caught a real criminal?
If it is a real crime they stand around with their thumbs up their butts and watch it happen.
If there is no crime, they specialize in manufacturing one. Either by getting someone to “lie” about what they had for dinner six months ago or by grabbing some room temperature IQ career criminal and encouraging him to commit a crime that he has no hope of pulling off. Or even starting to commit without half a dozen agents doing all the planning and ground work. And it would never occur to him in the first place without being prompted.
The poor schmuck might do 5% of the crime while the fbi is carrying 95% of the work, but he gets all the credit.
