The number of men enrolled at two- and four-year colleges has fallen behind women by record levels, in a widening education gap across the U.S.
Men are abandoning higher education in such numbers that they now trail female college students by record levels.
At the close of the 2020-21 academic year, women made up 59.5% of college students, an all-time high, and men 40.5%, according to enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit research group. U.S. colleges and universities had 1.5 million fewer students compared with five years ago, and men accounted for 71% of the decline.
This education gap, which holds at both two- and four-year colleges, has been slowly widening for 40 years. The divergence increases at graduation: After six years of college, 65% of women in the U.S. who started a four-year university in 2012 received diplomas by 2018 compared with 59% of men during the same period, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
In the next few years, two women will earn a college degree for every man, if the trend continues, said Douglas Shapiro, executive director of the research center at the National Student Clearinghouse.
No reversal is in sight. Women increased their lead over men in college applications for the 2021-22 school year—3,805,978 to 2,815,810—by nearly a percentage point compared with the previous academic year, according to Common Application, a nonprofit that transmits applications to more than 900 schools. Women make up 49% of the college-age population in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau.
“Men are falling behind remarkably fast,” said Thomas Mortenson, a senior scholar at the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education, which aims to improve educational opportunities for low-income, first-generation and disabled college students.

Reinstate the draft.
Men and women should do two years of public service after high school.
This gives them time to mature and figure out who they are.
Worked for me and many others in the ‘60s.
If you think about the value of a college degree, it's tested when you show it off in a resume and ask folks to hire you. So before spending too much time and money on college, you might as well ask those people for guidance on what colleges are worth it in that field. If you ask the college advisor they'll sell their product. But if you ask the people you're one day wanting to impress with a degree, they'll tell you what kind of degree/certificate is worth it.
And that's even if they say a degree is helpful anyway.
Blue collar = lifetime of work in the unheated/no AC elements, second class status and being not hit with the babes.
In western countries yes, but overseas there are some great options at a fraction of the cost, and white men are the big men on campus.
We played from dawn til dusk.
My parents said either go outside or clean. No TV watching. Drove bikes all throughout county roads and rural areas.
Blue collar work in not the panacea everyone here thinks it is.
Men were secretaries, bank cashiers and dominated just about every profession that couldn’t be practiced IN the home.
Hopefully they’re going into a trade where they can actually have a good career and make money.
I can’t remember the last woman on FR who wasn’t smart, patriotic and kind. I don’t know where they were before I retired. In other states I guess.
I bought my last two starter homes. Beyond that, it’s on them.
Girls go to college, to get more knowledge.
Boys go to Jupiter, to get more stupider.
My son is currently supervised by an African American woman. She is his favorite professor and he loves his job (in the campus food science laboratory.)
My husband has also had female bosses who were great. Not that this is a representative sample size, but maybe women scientists are easier for men to work with than, say, women retailers or middle management?
Not every woman makes a bad supervisor.
Just that the odds are against you.
Not really. ALL colleges now have Women’s Studies or other socialist crap as a freshman year course. Every course, even math, is inundated with snide comments about Americans and conservatives. Colleges shut down and courses were canceled to mourn when Trump was elected. Kid you not.
That means they aren't going to be buried in student loan debt like the dumb broads will be.
Men are being socially neutered as a threat to the new order. All traditional roles are being abolished or reversed in the name of equity.
Being a single welfare mother means college is free. Most the money spent on education for these women never pays any dividends.
I live in a university town & deal with students. The crap you cite can be avoided if one makes the effort. You exaggerate !
“I like your style.”
Maybe going to college, getting a useless degree, and concentrating on “her” career while ho’ing around makes women unhappy.
Women got tricked by feminists saying men had the life.
Divorce, anxiety, depression, and lack of morals abound in our current society.
I don’t understand how raising children became slavery in women’s eyes.
Also, with twice as many people to work, wages were suppressed, and now both parents often have to work.
Talk to some young women from high-school on. So many create alternate realities of their childhood *suddenly* while they are in college. They’re this way going into college, and a ways into it, then all of a sudden they snap.
There’s a quotation about how everyone knew Pravda was lying, but the point wasn’t to deceive, it was to break the minds of those who heard it day after day.
This stuff is, at least in part, deliberate.
Some men menstruate. Right.
