The eruption of an underwater volcano near South Iwo Jima sent a plume soaring into flight paths and created an expansive raft of floating rock.
Over the past decade, the Japan Coast Guard has occasionally spotted patches of milky blue water about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of South Iwo Jima island. The discolored water has been a subtle reminder that the summit of an active volcano—Fukutoku-Okanoba—lurks about 25 meters (80 feet) below the water surface.
On August 13, 2021, there was much more than just discolored water. A photograph taken by a Coast Guard aircraft flying near the volcano showed a towering plume of gas rising several kilometers into the air—a sure sign that explosive “Surtseyan” eruptions were happening.

Can Godzilla be far behind?
Can Godzilla be far behind?
Major volcanic eruptions produce about a day's worth of manmade CO2.
China claims the new land as their own ancient homeland.
Isn’t that #9 on the menu and the Japanese restaurant?
No, I mean counteract via particles in the atmosphere.
It’s Godzilla.
you have a source for that?
Extra strength Tums should fix it.
As soon as the volcanic seamount breaks the surface, China will claim it as their territory.
Just like it’s spelled
Fu ku tō ku
Long o, like in toe.
The u in ku sounds like coo...
Landsat 8 imagery also show several floating rafts of pumice drifting northwest of the eruption site. The satelliteâÂÂs Operational Land Imager (OLI) captured a remarkable image (above) of expansive gray pumice rafts on August 17, 2021, a few days after the eruption began. Pumice is one of the only types of rock that can float due to a combination of surface tension and the many air-filled holes and cavities found within the rock.
All you need is a ticket to South Iwo Jima and a boat ride later, all the fresh pumice you want. And no fear of a $50 ticket from Ranger Willie.
Years ago, just after the Pinatubo volcano in the Philippines blew it’s top, our company sent our chemists to a US government sponsored convention on Global Warming.
During the discussions one person asked...”Compared to the Pinatubo volcano, how much CO2 do humans produce?”
The government answer was humans produce about 5% as compared to the volcano.
The chemists, scientists and others all laughed, got up and left the meeting. Hey! There were still things to discuss! But everyone left.
Pumice Rafts-—so the island can tip over.
Japanese don’t put numbers on their menus, as they are classier than the Chinese.
I will let the people at the Tokyo Express know that next time I order.
They’re probably Chinese or Vietnamese…
I bet the women don’t carry umbrellas in the Sun…
