The 'Absolute Worst Thing' That Could Happen to the Electric Vehicle Industry Right Now Just Did

GM announced that it has issued a recall on every single Chevy Bolt made to date due to the battery fire risk. The move comes after two previous recalls, which were aimed at specific models.

The Bolt was first recalled in November after five cars that hadn’t been in crashes caught fire. After investigating the problem further, Chevy recalled a second batch in July. The problem was traced to two manufacturing defects that could occur simultaneously. The defects—a torn anode tab and a folded separator—created conditions that could lead to a short in affected cells. So far, the company has identified 10 fires that involve faulty batteries, according to an AP report. This third and latest recall includes 73,000 Bolts made from 2019 to 2022, the current model year, and brings the total recall to nearly 142,000 cars, with over 100,000 having been sold in the US. GM estimates that the initial recalls will cost $800 million, and it expects the new one to add $1 billion to the total. GM said it will be seeking reimbursement from LG. […]

Correction. I later saw that Stellantis is Dutch. Well the Dutch have a long and storied Automobile history. I think. Maybe. They did build an automobile a hundred or so years ago didn’t they?

In California, they are mandating electric cars and closing power plants.

Remember, you can’t put a Chevy Bolt in your Checked Luggage when you Fly. You have to put it in your Carryon Bag.

“We got plenty of cuckservatives here that would buy an electric car.”
Yeah, I know. They also give you the most idiotic excuses for buying one.

I had a 69 El Camino.

It was a great car. If I could get my hands on a 70 El Camino 454 SS for the right price it would be epic.

It’s the Chevelle of Pickup Trucks you know.

The Chinese are pushing their people to go electric, and building hundreds of new coal fired power plants to run them, so they can conserve petroleum for their military.

“The ‘Absolute Worst Thing’ That Could Happen to the Electric Vehicle Industry Right Now Just Did”

i don’t know about that ... it seems to me that it would be far worse if someone hacked the auto-drive code in all Teslas and instructed them all to drive to Elon Musk’s home no matter what the drivers did ...

Doe not affect Tesla

You know Tesla, the EV manufacturer that got the cold shoulder form the Biden White House on their EV Day.

EV Fires compared to Gasoline vehicle fires. Gas is far more dangerous. Chevy had the same problem Samsung had with their phone batteries. Those tabs are a problem for such powerful batteries.

Tesla has developed their own battery that does not have tabs, uses a different chemical formula that makes it easier and cheaper to source.

As the other legacy car manufacturers are pressing the panic button on their lack of EV’s or EV’s that are even close to Tesla. They are worried. Watch some of the Sandy Munro videos as he tore down the latest EV cars. It shows how far ahead Tesla is to the competition.

The batteries are a key thing. Has the other manufacturers get on the EV bandwagon, the materials like nickel will skyrocket in price and Tesla worried about the supply chain being disrupted along with eliminating the problem of tabs shorting. Their new 4680 battery does not have tabs.

Ford gave a legit effort with the Mach-E. But still it is far behind Tesla. The Ford Lightning truck has not been sold yet and Sandy Munro has not been able to tear it down. But they did get a change to look one over. The Lightning might be a legit product.

VW with their ID.4 is a mess and not worth it.

GM’s Volt got torpedoed by bad press, plus the Volt is very old technology compared to the Tesla’s and Ford Mach-E.

Chrysler - nada

Kia - just came out with a new EV. Munro looked it over and just from the look over it was an obvious half assed attempt.

When Biden ends up forcing a gallon of gas to way higher than $5, electric vehicles at least from Tesla will be hitting 500-700mi range and charging via electric will be much cheaper per mile va the cost of fuel(California not withstanding).

Electric vehicles make no sense at all. They require tremendous natural resources to manufacture. They require large power use to charge from electric grids already at capacity. Their batteries are super expensive to replace and YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THEM.

When the batteries catch fire, fire departments have a difficult time putting out the fires. In fact, people are being told NOT to put their EV’s in their garages because they can end up burning down the entire house, if not the neighborhood.

The batteries are VERY heavy. The new Ford F150 battery truck has a battery pack weighing 1,800 pounds.

There is no “standard battery” to fit all EV’s and probably never will be one.

Manufacturers will have to build thousands of extra batteries as replacements as the ones in use go bad. They do not have such inventories on hand now.

When your EV battery fails, you will have to wait for the dealer to receive a replacement AND wait for shop time for the dealer to replace it.

Replacing EV batteries will have to be done only by those with the massive lifting capability to remove and replace these enormous batteries.

You will be without your EV for quite some time while battery replacement is scheduled.

We had planned on replacing her 2012 Rav4 at 100,000 miles. (It doesn’t have 60,000) but the way Governor Baker (RINO) and the congress and Biden were going, I was afraid I might not be able to get anything decent. We (she) tried a 2021 ICE Rav4, and it drove like a dog, then she tried the plug-in hybrid. It had a lot more pep, she liked it. This is probably her last car, so what the Hell, why wait. If she likes it, that’s all I care about. I can afford to maintain it.

I’d probably have to move to get any mileage out of solar panels, or cut down the pine trees in our neighbors yard south of our house.

I think that's what my boss had. Black color, all the options. He belonged to a racing team on the side. After his problems with GM, he only bought European cars. As for myself, I had a 1957 Chevy coupe with a 327, tricked out with header pipes out the fenders, bucket seats, inside chrome, hydraulic shocks to raise/lower, etc., and regret selling it in the early 1970s. Never thought they would get expensive to buy later on.
