Or, put another way… If their face was on fire, I wouldn’t even piss on it to extinguish it, but I might put it out with an ice pick.
The old studio system was becoming history too. Directors and producers gained more power to do what they wanted.
You make it sound like it’s China’s fault.
Do you leave your door open?
I don't know. We watch a lot of Korean movies and series, mostly on Netflix. We prefer them to the Chinese variety, because the Chinese movies have a political bent and are inferior to the Koreans. Chinese movies do a lot of Japanese bashing, which detracts from storylines. The Korean shows are great quality, both for acting and directing and action. No gratuitous sex or LGBTQ queer stuff. We gave up long ago on Hollywood films.
True as well.
The difference with China, is that you must be a communist party member to get rich, or have parents in the communist party to enable you to be rich. There is a two-tier system in China. If the CCP is upset with you, you can lose your riches (even if you're a communist party member. So yes, communists in name only.
We love watching foreign films and series. Most notably, Korean shows via Netflix. Sometimes we get lucky with shows dubbed in English audio. But don't mind reading subtitles. When watching British shows, we turn subtitling on to better understand what the Brits are saying.
Makes sense - to a conservative / not to a LIEberal.
If Chinese citizens are going to watch propaganda, they’ll choose the Chinese propaganda with familiar actors/actresses.
They’ll choose foreign films if they provide a different message.
H-wood is enforcing racial quotas in casting, Chinese don’t want to see black actors, especially as romantic leads.
Rifftrax had the comment about Peter Graves regarding this pre-revolution movie:

Geriatric thrusting.
A few years back some UK people came over for some cross training. I didn’t have that much interaction with them apart from the odd laptop request.
Some of their accents were so thick I could not understand one word they said. I’ve Brit TV since the 70s.
The “country has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest movie market.”
Of course. China has a new middle class making $12K a year and they enjoy middle class items like movies, jeans and whiskey.
The problem is that Hollywood has unethical managers. If Hollywood was managed by ethical, patriotic, Christian producers, then Hollywood would make American items that are attractive to Americans, Chinese and other countries.
“If the CCP is upset with you, you can lose your riches (even if you’re a communist party member.”
And how is that different from here? If you don’t follow the “party” line here you’re out of your job or worse.
Dare say in a big corporations or any government agency, including the military, that men can’t get pregnant or that women don’t have dicks and you will be out on your ass in no time.
You’re in a time warp - this country is not like your grandfather country anymore. It’s become an asylum for the delusionals, and they’re in control. Bad as they are, the Chinese are at least somewhat grounded in reality, and if we don’t change our ways quickly they’ll be kicking our asses.
Nifty trick with the subtitles on British programs! Sometimes when they speak softly, it's difficult to understand.
Did you watch Mr Sunshine? That was a great story, and I recommend if you've missed it.
Scandanavian crime shows are pretty good, but be warned that the f-bomb isn't censored. I'm an old sailor, so I don't blush, but some might object if not warned.

#51 Try Pluto TV it is FREE and has many many of the old shows and current news as well. Some 200 plus channels.
They just added Gunsmoke and Andy Griffith.
Thanks for the hint. Escaping into the past is one good way to cope with all the crap hitting the fan today!
I wouldn’t miss it. They produce nothing but garbage.
