Study: Hollywood’s Share of China Box Office Collapses, Now Less Than 10%

The result is a potential existential crisis for Hollywood, which has bent over backwards to please China’s Communist dictators in the hopes of maintaining access to the lucrative Chinese market.

But the reverse has happened. Hollywood’s share of the China box office market has plummeted to just 9.5 percent so far this year, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, as reported by Variety.

The stark decline comes as Hollywood imports are being edged out by domestic releases.

Last year, only two Hollywood releases cracked China’s top-ten grossing movies — Tenet and The Croods: A New Age. For 2019, only Avengers: Endgame and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw made the top-ten list. A decade ago, Hollywood accounted for eight of China’s top-ten grossing movies.

Chinese audiences are instead gravitating toward home-grown movies in larger numbers, lifting the time-traveling comedy Hi, Mom and the buddy-cop adventure Detective Chinatown 3 to blockbuster status. Meanwhile, recent Hollywood titles like Disney-Pixar’s Luca and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon have failed to resonate with local audiences.

Even Universal’s dependable Fast & Furious franchise, which has been enormously popular in China, is showing signs of fatigue. The latest installment, F9, saw its China grosses plummet in the second week by a stunning 85 percent.

Hollywood’s decline in China comes as the Communist country has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest movie market.

Beijing also appears to be exercising tighter controls over its Hollywood import quotas. Disney hasn’t seen a Marvel superhero movie released in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Marvel Studios’ Black Widow still doesn’t have a China release date.

In the sixties, DC would run what they called “imaginary stories,” as if the regular comics weren’t imaginary. So Batman could kill Superman, or Lois Lane married Lex Luthor. It was a divergence from the standard plots each month.

But Marvel started having Spiderman advocate for prison reform at the time the liberals were adopting criminals as their pets, the Warren Court was allowing murderers to run wild, and the libs were overturning the death penalty. You knew something was wrong. No wonder the Green Goblin always came back.

China has taken to capitalism and profit with a vengeance. They have some of the world’s biggest corporations owned by shareholders (that includes millions of Americans) and soon they will have more billionaires and millionaires than we have.

We’ve gotten to the point where we are more socialist than China. They are a one party dictatorship but have totally shed their communist identity. They truly are CINOs - Communists in name only.

It is here that profits and capitalism are demonized every day and in every school... I mean indoctrination camp.

The studios have allowed the cost of producing a movie to skyrocket, to where most corporations don’t want to take many chances on any new material. That brings you all this recycled material with just a few changes.

That's why we are seeing nothing but Marvel/D.C. and Disney movies with a remake here and there of a successful flick in the past. Remake of Ben-Hur, for example

The 60s Wes’s the decade we began to cast off traditional American values. For movies it saw the complete abandonment of the Hayes code. Producers/directors who were previously constrained by the code were now free to produce whatever they wanted.

It’s how we went from hearing the name of God only in reverent usage to complete irreverent usage. From no nudity to nudity. And on and on.

While I refuse to go to movie theaters, I do enjoy some movies and television programs. I just watch from home.

I've discovered some foreign shows that are excellent. They really make clear that the American film/entertainment industry is just not good.

After a while, you get used to the subtitles. In fact, I wonder if that's part of what make those programs good. You really have to pay attention; you can't just have it on and run to kitchen or multi-task.

LOL! I was watching a movie on my DVR this morning while playing around on my computer. I had to rewind twice to see when one character was killed because I was paying more attention to my computer.
