Study: Hollywood’s Share of China Box Office Collapses, Now Less Than 10%
Brieitbart ^ | 29 Aug 2021 | DAVID NG

The result is a potential existential crisis for Hollywood, which has bent over backwards to please China’s Communist dictators in the hopes of maintaining access to the lucrative Chinese market.

But the reverse has happened. Hollywood’s share of the China box office market has plummeted to just 9.5 percent so far this year, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, as reported by Variety.

The stark decline comes as Hollywood imports are being edged out by domestic releases.

Last year, only two Hollywood releases cracked China’s top-ten grossing movies — Tenet and The Croods: A New Age. For 2019, only Avengers: Endgame and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw made the top-ten list. A decade ago, Hollywood accounted for eight of China’s top-ten grossing movies.

Chinese audiences are instead gravitating toward home-grown movies in larger numbers, lifting the time-traveling comedy Hi, Mom and the buddy-cop adventure Detective Chinatown 3 to blockbuster status. Meanwhile, recent Hollywood titles like Disney-Pixar’s Luca and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon have failed to resonate with local audiences.

Even Universal’s dependable Fast & Furious franchise, which has been enormously popular in China, is showing signs of fatigue. The latest installment, F9, saw its China grosses plummet in the second week by a stunning 85 percent.

Hollywood’s decline in China comes as the Communist country has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest movie market.

Beijing also appears to be exercising tighter controls over its Hollywood import quotas. Disney hasn’t seen a Marvel superhero movie released in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Marvel Studios’ Black Widow still doesn’t have a China release date.

Wouldn’t it be great if this happens to the NBA as well?

Are China’s own films really more popular? Are Chinese sick of the same plastic, repetitive, post-modern crap from Hollywood?

Remember too that the CCP controls literally everything in China. The slightest pressure, done with no public fanfare, could easily reduce allowed foreign media of all kinds, to a trickle.

The truth is hard to know.

I’m sure one of the reasons is they don’t use Chinese actors.... They use white actors like Matt Damon in china and figure that will work......

China did to Hollywood what it has done to every industry. Stolen their trade practices and nationalized them.

Hollywood deserved it above anybody else.

Hollywood and particularly Disney are getting it hard like a chicom COVID-19 test these past few months. Let them burn. I wouldn’t waste good piss to put them out.

You are correct. The chicoms have denied key releases by Hollywood and Disney for the chicom market. They are denying them access and it’s hitting them hard now since many Americans simply won’t watch them.

In all fairness, how many movies have been made in the last 18months? Everything got shut down and it takes a long time to fully bake one.

Beautifully stated.

The fatal shot was when Hollywood decided that the bad guy would prevail against the good guy. Starting in the 60s (why did everything destructive begin then?), the antihero/hero rode off into the sunset with the beautiful girl, squashing the hero/pathetic loser underneath his wheels.

Funny how China is now riding off into the sunset with the by beautiful girl and squashing Hollywood underneath it’s wheels.

Maybe they’ll do a movie about it. 🍿

How soon before we see movies here of Chinese superheroes prancing around in tights? I was going to suggest Captain China, but they already have it.

China was expecting new rivals to Casablanca, Citizen Kane, the Godfather and the Wizard of Oz.

They got today’s Hollywood flops instead.

They say Chinese used to go crazy for Fast and Furious sequels but the latest fell off 85% the second week. Go figure.

Now China doesn’t need American filmmakers anymore; they can produce their own films for their own people using movie technology (such as 3D computer animation) they stolen or were given to them by Hollywood.

I believe that, too. Hollywood learned a hard lesson — at least, I hope they learned from it. Maybe they will strive more to appeal to American audiences and stop filming in China.

New movies are unwatchable except JoJo Rabbit, made a few years ago by a foreign writer. Wonderful satire on Hitler.

Other than that, no thanks. I have a big collection of DVD’s, watched The Aviator last night, made in 2004. Based on the life of Howard Hughes.
