Up to 1,500 Americans are still trapped in Afghanistan and the U.S. is still relying on the Taliban to allow safe passage to Kabul airport with just six days before the August 31 deadline, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a press conference on Wednesday.
Blinken gave an updated on the airlift operation and the bid to get all citizens and Afghan allies out amid reports the CIA has joined U.S. troops in rescue missions outside the airport perimeter.
Thousands of people are still trying to leave Afghanistan as U.S. troops start leaving and evacuation flights begin to wrap up, but are being stopped and beaten by insurgents on their way.
Among those left are 24 school children from California who visited on a summer trip and haven't been able to leave.
Blinken appeared to blame Americans still on the ground for not leaving fast enough after first being warned earlier this year to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible.

A nonprofit from Marin County has workers who haven’t been able to get out.
I’m not saying to leave them there. I’m not even saying we shouldn’t be doing all that we can to get them out... BUT... everyone knew back in July that we were getting out. The only thing we didn’t know is that the whole country would fall to the taliban so fast. That’s no excuse!
Even if it was stupid to be in a ‘war-torn’ country before, they should have cut out the first moment they heard the U.S. was on the outs.
I agree… Too bad the exit strategy was diplomats and anybody but Americans first. I was seriously considering work in A Stan as a great plan B. Luckily, the Lord watches over my or else plans.

The only school involvement was the parents' request that the school hold open the children's spots at their schools.

surely there was a state department advisory notice warning US citizens not to visit afghanistan in effect during the previous months. whether or not that was the case, there is always common sense and paying attention to current news regarding afghanistan. any non-afghani traveling to or staying in afghanistan should have been aware of the potential issues of staying there during widespread civil unrest. any aware adult should would imho have been remiss not to recall the lessons of the vietnam war pullout.
afghani-us citizens and citizen wannabes for a large part presumeably have the advantages of looking like and speaking like native afghanis. if so, unless they are in wheelchairs, they can get a compass, knife, day pack, and water bottle, and hoof it to the nearest border, traveling only at night. if they are in wheelchairs, maybe they can rely on the mercy of allah.

From the poorly written news stories I’m guessing they are the kids of former Special Immigrant visa holders. The kids and their parents must be LPRs or US citizens as they have already entered the US on the SIV and were just back in Afghanistan on summer vacation.

Heard on Hannity the CIA left six weeks ago. Florida congressman on the line at the time would not confirm but did not challenge the info.
That would make sense anything is stupid even by California standards !
