For many things, there are windows where certain kinds of learning take place and when it is closed, the child ages out, whatever he got then is it.
Focus on the Family did a series many years ago about increasing the intelligence of your child.
Turns out that between the ages of 8-18 months, social interaction, especially with mom, makes a HUGE difference.
It involves eye to eye contact when talking to the child, and talking to them on an adult level. Apparently, by talking to them like that instead of baby talk, talking down to them, challenges them to use more brain power to figure things out.
Also, sitting down with them and reading to them is also big, as well as simply doing things with them. Ordinary, everyday things.
