Trump asks if Rand Paul has 'learned lesson' on endorsements
The Hill ^ | 08/05/21 12:08 PM EDT | BY MAX GREENWOOD

Former President Trump singled out Sen. Rand Paul on Thursday, asking if the Kentucky Republican “will apologize” for breaking with him in an Ohio GOP House primary.

Trump’s candidate of choice, coal industry lobbyist Mike Carey, won that primary on Tuesday, all but assuring that he’ll go on to succeed former Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), who stepped down earlier this year to lead the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

Paul, meanwhile, had thrown his support behind former Ohio state Rep. Ron Hood in the Ohio primary, putting himself at odds with Trump. A political action committee aligned with Paul spent heavily in support of Hood — an investment that didn’t go unnoticed by Trump.

Hood placed third in the Tuesday primary, falling more than 20 points short of Carey.

“Do you think Rand Paul will apologize for spending nearly $1 Million on another candidate in Ohio's 15th District congressional race after I had already endorsed Mike Carey?” Trump said in a statement. “In any event, Mike went on to an unprecedented victory, more than doubling the second placed finisher and Rand's candidate came in a distant third out of eleven.”

Trump was quick to tout Carey’s win this week as his own as he seeks to prove his dominance over the GOP. The former president has faced challenges to his influence in recent weeks after his preferred candidate in a Texas runoff lost to another Republican.

Several Senate Republicans also broke with Trump last week in voting to take up a bipartisan infrastructure bill that he had lobbied against.

His remarks on Paul on Thursday suggest that he’s willing to go after even his allies when it comes to his post-presidential influence in Republican politics.

“Rand is a different kind of guy, but I like him a lot anyway, and I'm proud to have endorsed him when when he ran,” he said. “Do you think he learned his lesson?”

Just seen the comments from Trump on Rand.

1) Not really that scathing

2) They're still good friends.

3) Trump has made some terrible endorsements in the past as well (though they appear to be getting better now that Kusher is not advising him any more).

Still think if Trump runs Rand should be his VP pick if he's serious about reforming government. Another Pence type would be disappointing to say the least...

Rand is a strong fiscal conservative.

Who else will insist on balancing the books? The odds are if not Rand it will be some Pence type (ineffective and offers nothing )

I agree - not that scathing - I hope they stay allies.

They are both top notch reformers with balls enough to fight.

They shouldn’t waste time fighting each other.

They won’t fight over a crumby endorsement. No need to worry about that

Sorry I should say: They won’t fall out over an endorsement.

Besides, Trump has endorsed some establishment Republicans in the past and disappointed supporters

I don’t think Trump is ‘going after allies’ as much as just ribbing them in friendly sportsmanship. Competition is good, Trump knows that, and it just makes his candidate look all the better that he did have competition, that republicans did have a choice instead of a designated hitter. At least that’s what I think.

I think these 2 will be fine.

Speaking more broadly, I do think the GOP is the same as the Democrat Party. I trust Republicans who support Trump 100%. If you’re not following Trump, then I don’t know if I can follow you. That’s not a perfect method to weigh the value of a politician, but it’s all I’ve got at this point. I just don’t trust these people.

“Rand is a strong fiscal conservative.”

He is a liberaltarian, always was.

This is more a Corey Lewandowski zinger. Don’t buck the leader of the party on endorsement. That’s all.

I love Rand Paul. He’s an American hero. He fights the tyranny of experimental jabs and masks.

He revealed Dr. Fallacy as a fraud and illicit funder of the ChiCom Virus.

Who else fights against these monsters? DeSantis is doing great for Floridians but Rand is fighting for all Americans.

God bless him and President Trump.

True. No need for PDJT to poke the bear. Just let it be. He went too far ridiculing McCain and we’re all paying for it now. I’m not saying that McCain didn’t deserve it, and more, but sometimes it’s best in the long run to not make enemies if you don’t have to.

Darn.. I was going to put "liberaltarian", but decided against it for some reason. Guess my 'Spidey sense' knew someone else probably beat me to it.. 😁

Yeah Donald is just ribbing him.

Though even I’m surprised Rand spent 1 million to prop up this guy in Ohio.

Perhaps the lesson is they should work together more.

We can’t afford this to happen in Wyoming for example (Cheney).

He’d be a better pick than Bush, and probably than Pence.

Who would you suggest?

Thomas is my go-to guy, but he’s Catholic so cloning won’t work, he’s getting a bit old, and he’s needed where he is. I sort of trust Alito. There was a third person who sort of emerged on the radar as having potential the other day, but generally nearly everyone in the higher reaches is either a very mixed bag or a consistent detriment.

They’re either with him or against him.

If it’s the latter, they are the enemy.

Simple as that.

I’m not worried about it - I think they are both truth-tellers and independent thinkers - their opinions aren’t always going to match up - and that’s OK.

The Left receives their cookie-cutter talking points for the day from Soros or whomever - our side doesn’t operate that way.

Besides, I think both President Trump and Senator Paul understand that there are advantages to building a reputation both for having angry outbursts and for lavishing praise. It’s Management Theory 101:

Any CEO will tell you that you need to stretch the boundaries of what your subordinates expect in reaction to their performance. Show strong approval when you approve, and strong disapproval when you don’t.

Otherwise, they will feel safe that they have your general approval and won’t work as hard to earn it.

The press is too stupid to know when Trump is trolling them.

The word “journalist” these days is equivalent to “retard”. /spit.
