The main reason to have a dead man’s switch is to actually protect your life. To use it properly, you need a very very secret but reliable (but very secret. Did I say secret?) method of having the valuable information released if you don’t check in, and then you need to make sure that your enemies know you have it.

The second reason (and this is a very distant second) to have it is to screw over the people who killed you. Heh
