Simone Biles, the superstar gymnast from the U.S., will not participate in the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Games and will instead focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said in a statement early Wednesday.
The decision comes a day after she pulled out of the team all-around competition.
Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the individual all-around competition.
"After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games," USA Gymnastics said in a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday night. "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
The statement said Biles will be evaluated daily to see if she can "participate in next week’s individual event finals."

quitters are now “courageous”, the language is 180 degrees off reality now.
I don’t even begin to know the details of the situation for her, but giving accolades to someone for quitting doesn’t sound like genuine praise, it sounds like covering for something.
In general, outside of extenuating circumstances, quitters deserve no praise.
We’ll disagree. At the very least, if someone is going to make comments anonymously it should be AFTER the Olympics.
I think what Biles did was wrong (more the manner in which she did it). It’s just as wrong for some anonymous complainer to take shots at Biles DURING the Olympics. That comes across as “score settling” first and representing USA second.
My sister saw her performance on the floor exercise. She literally went out of bounds. Then she made a major mistake in the pummel horse. Those incidents were before she withdrew. She clearly was not performing well and her scores were a drag on the team’s standings. Whatever is messed up in her head, she was likely right to withdraw.
If she had backed out before the Olympics she wouldn’t have gotten any grief over it.
I know, its crazy. I wonder if the press would just stop, for a moment even, and consider what it would be like to be followed around day and night by camera wielding organized teams of crazy stalker people eternally on the alert for any possible “scoop.” If they want to honestly talk about mental health issues, talk about that.
Even when they’re acting nice, they’re creepy!
Re: 107 - best post of the thread.
“It’s just as wrong for some anonymous complainer to take shots at Biles DURING the Olympics.”
No one can trust a “reporter” so it will be a cacophony of offhand remarks.
For now.
How about Tom Brady played ALL of last season with an MCL injury?
Does she wear a frock coat and bipperty-bopperty hat?
Yes. Bile’s knew she didn’t have her A game, so she just up and quit. She’s a wuss.
I think she’s burnt out. All the attention she’s been getting has taken it’s toll. Her young mind seems to be having trouble coping with all the pressure.
Compare her with child actors who have similar problems dealing with fame and all the baggage associated with it. At least she has the good sense to pull back and re-evaluate. Kudos to her for that.
I’m disappointed like most Americans, I was looking forward to seeing her performances and winning her events, but she is doing the right thing.
She’s already a champion.
We won't be able to get her face off of our TVs until they don't need her any longer.
She's going to be making a lot of money off of this, I'm sure. An acting gig?
It just distracts from the team (for now).
Oh well.
Yeah, but she has flatterers to the left, flatterers to the right, flattering yes-men trying to grab a piece of reflected glory all around. Its going to be all about her with the yes-man types unless she goes out of her way to try to surround herself with people who will be honest and point out when she’s being a jerk.
Theres a reason why famous people flame out.
She already won those 4 golds at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. So that takes care of that “lifetime “ till then. This Olympics is about the last 4/5 years of hard training.
c. Her team supports her; they understand, you do not.
I doubt if her teammates are happy about her withdrawing half way through the team competition and costing them the gold.
Nobody else in the team withdrew citing “mental stress”. They were all facing some pressure. Its the Olympics dude, not a dinner party.
Yup.
You run away from the enemy and leave your colleagues to face the bullets and they call you “courageous”.
This is the equivalent of Tom Brady quitting his team during half-time and refusing to come out and play for the second half.
What do you think the media would do to him?
Cheer him for prioritizing his mental health?
They’d destroy him professionally and personally, call him soft and weak and he’d lose everything he had.
