A Shocking Number of College Grads Wish They Had Been Taught More Life Skills

Remember when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was amazed by a garbage disposal and the idea that you can grow food in the ground? Many of us tittered and guffawed. As it turns out, she is not an anomaly. According to a poll from SWNS digital, 81% of college grads wish they had been taught more life skills before graduation. Instead, they learned the importance of pronouns and social justice activism. It seems that many students leave a college clueless about budgeting and what to do when you can’t afford DoorDash.

The learned helplessness churned out from our universities seems intentional. College grads who leave school without life skills are more willing to rely on the government. According to the poll:

Heck, most people can’t use Word effectively, let alone Excel. If people generating serious documents aren’t using Styles consistently and effectively, they don’t really know how to use Word. Most don’t.

I have read some young Americans don’t purchase dry breakfast cereal once they live on their own, because they don’t want to have to wash the dishes once done.

So they don't even know enough to shove a handful of dry cereal into their mouths and chug some milk directly from the carton like I... well, some people I've heard of doing?

My son took a cooking class in HS. Just out of curiosity I asked him why he took cooking.
He gave two good answers.
1. He likes to eat and they got to eat their class projects.
2. “Mama won’t be around to cook for me forever.”

He now lives on his own and is a pretty darned good cook. Better than me.

My other son took the shop classes and can do any type of work needed around a house. BUT he can only cook hamburgers. I’m slowly working on his culinary skills.

Way back when I was in high school, I needed an elective one semester so I looked at the listings and chose Home Economics.

When I was asked why, I gave two good answers:

(1) I got to eat my class projects ... and ...

(2) I was the only guy in a class of 30 ...

When I was in high school they taught “home economics”, and it wasn’t just cooking and sewing and girl classes either.

They taught you how to make a basic home budget at a specified income level; how to bank your check, how to balance a checkbook, how to pay your bills (on time), how to budget for fuel, groceries, recurring monthly costs and how to save what was left over for those emergency expenses (not a new pair of tennis shoes).

Of course that was a very long time ago and most of us guys didn’t much care for it, but it was a GRADUATION REQUIREMENT!

Had a tech guy once tell me that pretty soon everything would be done in “Virtual Reality”.

I asked him if that “virtual reality” mechanic was going to fix his flat tire out in the middle of nowhere, waaay out there where there was no cell service.

He just looked at me like a cornered bunny and didn’t say a word!

That’s their uppity, arrogant, mentality. One of the many reasons I have such a strong dislike for liberal, hipster techie.

Tell them to use their apps and virtual reality to fix their roof after a tree comes crashing through.

I used to be the Maintenance Supervisor for a school district in Southern California.

About 3 years before I retired the district promoted a teacher I knew to the Principals position at one of our high schools, for some reason or other the guy was interested in farming and livestock.

He knew I owned a farm in Northern California and asked if I would help him put together a small farm and livestock area on his new campus, at first I just told him to contact FFA but he eventually talked me into it.

He called me about 6 or 7 years after I had retired and asked me to come by next time I was in So. Cal.
Had to go down for some medical appointments and I did stop by, I was pretty impressed with the way he had a new Ag Class taking care of their business.

The kids were doing the farming and animal husbandry, and making wine, cheese, and selling produce in the local outdoor market.

DAMN, THEY WERE EVEN MAKING A PROFIT!

He asked me if I would give a demonstration and small class on butchering; I was kind of doubtful about how the kids would take something like that, but as I was going to down there for over 2 weeks I said OK.

Started them out with chickens, how to kill them quickly and with as least amount of fright and pain as possible.

Tom had about 40 kids in that class, so he paired them up and had each team pick one of the older layers for the block.
I demonstrated on 2 birds; how to calm the bird, cut it’s throat, and bleed it without it flapping and flopping all over (got to hold them just right).

Only one boy on a team said he just couldn’t do it - the girl on his team did a very professional job.

Showed them how to both hot dip the chicken for plucking, and how to skin a fresh bird if that was their choice.

A lot of these kids are willing and able to learn , it’s just that there are not enough of us old farts left who are willing to teach.

We also butchered a young hog, but that’s a story for another time.

Yup. Still do those corners 50+ years after boot camp.

While those of tender sensibilities have to do with elastic "fitted sheets."

(The bottom sheet wears out fastest. If top and bottom are identical, they can be rotated for longer wear.)

Colleges should offer a once a week life skills course. ... Change a tire, use of basic tools, plant seeds, how interest works, saving for their own future,

That is what parents are for.
