Remember when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was amazed by a garbage disposal and the idea that you can grow food in the ground? Many of us tittered and guffawed. As it turns out, she is not an anomaly. According to a poll from SWNS digital, 81% of college grads wish they had been taught more life skills before graduation. Instead, they learned the importance of pronouns and social justice activism. It seems that many students leave a college clueless about budgeting and what to do when you can’t afford DoorDash.
The learned helplessness churned out from our universities seems intentional. College grads who leave school without life skills are more willing to rely on the government. According to the poll:

Special K single serve got me through boot camp. 😊
Even stop-and-go isn’t so bad for a while. I make a game out of minimizing shifts and complete stops while also not opening such a large gap that everyone’s cutting in front of me. Takes concentration and anticipation.
Not a few of these “single moms” (TM) pushed dad out of the house and any influence he may have had courtesy of the “family” court and various government agencies. Of course dear old dad’s wallet was still extracted though.
This succeeded in destroying the black family and is well on its way to decimating suburban white families.
You’re right, but that isn’t my point.
My point is, that there are a lot of boys these days that have very little to no male influences in their lives. How many male teachers are there nowadays? Not a whole lot.
Some of these boys could use just one man in their lives. Even if it’s just a class on how to build a birdhouse.
Colleges are not there to teach “life skills.” That is called parenting.
I did not go to college to learn how to change a tire, or saw wood, or unclog a toilet.
That’s stuff I learned from my Dad, my Mom, and others in my life.
If you are a parent and you are NOT getting your kid exposure to those things, you are doing the world a disservice.
Wonder how many college grads know how to balance a checkbook?
That and learning Excel.
First life skill I learned (1962) was that if you don’t work, you don’t eat.
So I picked green beans for a penny a pound. 98 degree temps 70% humidity. Talk about HOT! Then I realized, everyone else on the migrant crew who were also picking beans were all white!
Wish I had learned how my “White Privilege” could have kept me fed without working!
So...all the instructors are expected to come in and put on a demonstration of what life would be like with two parents? For free?
No thanks. If your parents are not willing or able to do that job, then you should pay extra to have someone do that stuff for you.
College is not a vocational school. Learn that crap on your own time—don’t increase my kid’s tuition because parents cannot do their jobs.
I’ve noticed the same thing.
Idiots have to learn the hard way, if they learn at all.
No kidding?
But yes, working a spreadsheet is another critical skill these days.
My daughters best friend called me about a used car she was looking at. It was a Ford Fusion with a stick. Both she and her husband knew how to drive it.
I said that only 10% of drivers want a stick and probably 2% of those want a sedan.
I gave her a lowball price to offer. She got an even better deal. The dealer wanted that car gone.
Life skills?
Start with the following:
There are only 2 genders
Capitalism works. Socialism doesn’t
Get a job. Any job.
Read the Constitution
Follow Jesus. Obey the Lord.
no, they should not.
Life skills are to be learned from family and friends. College is for academics. There are more than enough inappropriate required course, which is part of the reason it takes 5-6 years to get through in some cases.
They’re disappearing in the rest of the world (well, Europe), especially on performance cars. F1 has had paddle shifters with automated clutches and such for 2 decades at this point, and it has filtered down to regular cars. VW put automated dual clutch transmissions with paddle shifters on the Golf starting c. 2006, and they were faster than the manual transmission version of the same car (which was still offered back then) driven by a hot shoe driver.
I ask people who want manual transmissions if they also want a crank starter and carbide headlights to complete their obsolete vehicle technology anachronisms.
NCOs are the backbone of the Army. I hope we haven’t completely messed that up with woke field grade officer leadership.
These are Jr high a d high school skills.
They're not SUPPOSED to learn "life skills" in a university. They should be getting this in elementary and high school.
These are, after all, skills that EVERYONE, not just college graduates, are supposed to know.
