I'm no expert, but I think that's standard and expected. Virus mutations typically weaken the disease. And by becoming more contagious but less fatal, we get herd immunity more easily. Hopefully, this Delta Variant will spread like wildfire, give everyone a mild flu-like illness for a few days, and grant massive levels of immunity throughout society. Sounds like great news.

That is the natural evolution of a successful virus. It becomes less deadly as to kill the host stops the transmission. It becomes more contagious as this enhances transmission. I have just described covid. I have also described the common cold.
HIV is the odd virus. It kills you be over many years. Thus the infected are a vector for years and often do not even know it. HIV is a very successful virus.
Ebola although almost always fatal is not a successful virus. It kills quickly and thus eliminates its vector for transmission. It is a very bad virus but not truly successful.
