Because Ma is a ChiCom through and through
CCP just showed Ma who’s in charge. You’re allowed to play only at the pleasure of the Politburo Standing Committee.

1st rule of life in the mob or government (much the same thing) - never outshine the boss.

How would the Chinese Gov. treat people who shared photos of him?

He became rich and famous because he was allowed to be.
He pissed off the powers that be and now he is neither of those things.
The entire country is smoke and mirrors.

Ma created one of the world’s greatest businesses and nursed from infancy to fabulous adulthood.

His downfall was a foreshadowing of anti business things to come

Some of what was mentioned in the article and a lot that was not:

Jack Ma’s real name is Ma Yun which means Horse Cloud in Chinese - the CCP put out a picture the November before he disappeared of a horse in the sky with clouds as a warning.

Jack before he vanished was worth US$41.8 billion. He was on of the most powerful people, the most inspirational, the most admired people in China. Jack ordinarily by his looks would not be hired at a fortune 500 company in China - looks are the first thing employers want to see so they can decide whether or not they like you. He was constantly - based on his appearance - rejected for even the most menial job, until he started Alibaba, and rose to the number 21 spot on Forbes list of the most powerful people, the richest person in China - except for Xi Jinping who was ranked the most powerful person in the world.

Xi Jinping decided that he is at the top; everything is below him, no matter what, he will always come out on top.

What Ma actually said that got him in trouble:
“Today’s financial system is the legacy of the Industrial Age. We must set up a new one for the next generation and young people. We must reform the current system.”

Before that Ma had said another no-no in China: “The global financial regulators are an old people’s club ill-suited to oversee China’s Tech innovation.”

That last sentence was the trigger, out of context, sure. Nonetheless, it was seen as a challenge. It marked him as too big with too large a following and became a problem, because like media stars that were arrested, those opinions might replace the Leaders opinions in people’s minds, likewise for inspiration or becoming a role model.

China’s anti-corruption campaign is not about ‘corruption’, its about removing any challenges to the CCP - and particularly to Xi Jinping. The Chinese people liked the campaign at the outset because the more corrupt an individual became, the less everyone else got. China is an unbelievably unfair and very very corrupt country with CCP and PLA members shaking down a small village or seizing property without compensation - that’s just how it works there. Corruption is a way of life, you have to use corruption to thrive. When using arrests for corruption, it is no longer about corruption, but about removing enemies, challengers. Moreover, those resources now belong to the Party.

Ma was operating outside of the Party, and power got to his head which cannot exist under the current leadership. In China, it can seem like a fairly free society, as long as you don’t become too big. If you do get too big, you either get absorbed or erased.

Alibaba? This brings me back to my childhood and “Open Sesame!”

My dad would say that when he pushed the button on the remote garage door opener. When I was very young I thought my father was doing magic. :)

My childhood memories aside, this is far more serious than I thought.

Thank God for FReepers.

I’ll never forget, on 9/11, within seconds of the second plane crashing into the WTC, one after another person here said a two-word post: “Al Qaeda.”

I often wonder about these guys that “stay in the game” after they make the first big wad of money. It has to be a lot of hard work to go from nothing to $100 million. Who needs even that much money?
People are different.
