JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- Civil Air Patrol, a non-profit organization and auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is a program that teaches the youth about aerospace careers.
Doing their part to try to combat the pilot shortage, Civil Air Patrol is encouraging those aged 12-18 to join the program to prepare them to become either commercial or military pilots.
By the end of 2023, commercial airlines are expected to be short 12,000 to 20,000 pilots. Currently, the Air Force is out 2,000 to 5,000 pilots.
With open opportunities on the rise, the chance to pursue a pilot career can start at the Greater Binghamton Airport where the local Civil Air Patrol squadron is located.
Government Relations Advisor Maj. Franklin Birt, says that the program is a hands-on experience right from the beginning.
"At twelve years old, the cadets get to go up with one of our pilots," Birt said. "The pilot will take off and get up to altitude and then hand the controls over to the cadet and then let them do some maneuvers."
To further inspire current cadets, pilots of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will be participating in a meet and greet event with the future pilots before the Greater Binghamton Air Show in mid-July.
Anyone that is interested in joining the program is encouraged to attend a meeting on Thursdays at 6 pm at the airport, visit the national website, or email the local squadron at nerny292@gmail.com for more information.
Yeah... No.
Wait until democrats sue it into oblivion.
Why? The hours suck, the means to become a pilots sucks, the pay sucks, and the pay is steadily going down.
This is uplifting (pardon the pun) news about the Civil Air Patrol teaching our youth to fly. But this forum allows me to voice fears that I have about our government on this 4th of July eve.
I have been worried that in the name of diversity, the US is going to loosen the standards for job qualifications. The scariest would be pilots and doctors. This is not new. General Chuck Yeager mentioned, in his autobiography, that when he was instructing future pilots he was pressured to admit a student who was not qualified and (if I remember correctly) later was dismissed for poor performance.
Dumbing down and feminizing boys is not all it’s cracked up to be.
-Private Pilot
They can just identify as an airline pilot.
Thank you, you saved me a lot of time. Ditto.
Lick my balls, private pilot from Star Wars? F off.
I wonder if the shortage of pilots was due to airline bankruptcies and young people decided not to be a pilot.
Total B.S.
Unless an airline pilot is stupid, they will have so much money in their 401k, plus a paid off house; they won’t need a job or second career.
I was a junior volunteer in my teens and enjoyed it. I also got some good training in First Aid. They took us up in their Grumman Cheeta, and taught us basic flying skills.
Yes things opened up a lot with deregulation and the massive expansion of aviation/airlines in general. Peopl who hung in there adding hours, pursuing their multi engine and commercial ratings won big a few years down the line. 1977 however was still in the post war era of aviation which was largely military trained people.
I am a private pilot and have been for 35 years.
Light sport was supposed to be an inexpensive intro to flying.
A typical Light sport plane is near $100,000.
I asked an exec from Piper why a J3 Cub cost $125,000 about 10 years ago?
He said it cost about $30,000 and the rest goes in to a slush fund for future law suits/.
Hmmmm. Maybe they need a better marketing angle.
You can only market what you have to sell.
Aspiring airline pilots should do more investigating on how to become an airline pilot.
