President Joe Biden’s Veteran Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough said the federal government now is in the business of helping veterans undergo surgery to alter their biological sex. McDonough said in prepared remarks that the Department of Veteran Affairs will move to make “gender reassignment” surgery available to veterans.
This is in stark contrast to the Trump administration, which made serving in the U.S. military reserved for men and women who are housed according to their biological sex.
McDonough claimed the policy is necessary because transgender veterans are at greater risk of mental illness and suicidal thoughts but do not always seek treatment.
“We’re making these changes not only because they are the right thing to do, but because they can save lives,” McDonough said.
The Associated Press reported McDonough said the policy will allow “transgender vets to go through the full gender confirmation process with VA by their side.”
McDonough said the decision is based on the “recommendation of our clinicians, so this is a health care decision that has very real physical health care impacts as well as significant mental health impact,” AP reported.
Bay News 9 in Orlando reported that according to the National Center for Transgender Equality estimates there are about 134,000 transgender veterans:
“For far too long, and for far too many,” respect and care “were not the norm for our LGBTQ+ community and our veterans,” McDonough said, adding that this is why the VA is “determined to continue down that path. The path of progress.”

I hear injuries from all the face palming are starting to threaten readiness.
I would offer this sentiment about mixing the VA into the middle of the transgender surgical discussions...the last place on Earth that you’d want to take some guy/gal with this problem is the VA. They take so many procedures regarding health and screw them up loyally.
So those people with this issue...I wish them well on getting mental help, but I’d be skeptical of the VA ‘saving’ them, and most will end up in worse shape than they are presently.
Surgery for mental illness.
It is like bariatric (stomach reduction) surgery for people with anorexia.
In a few years, there may be a wave of doctors, hospitals and insurance companies sued for malpractice when the patients have a change in mental condition.

There was so much petty baloney with the Veterans Benefits Association (VBA) and Agent Orange claims for Vietnam Veterans that the US Congress finally passed a law, A LAW, that the VBA would automatically grant service connection to any Vietnam Veteran who had been in Vietnam when Agent Orange was used and then developed leukemia.
A FEDERAL LAW.
My friend Randy was in Vietnam when Agent Orange was used.
He developed leukemia.
His paperwork was in order and complete.
The VBA denied his claim.
THEY VIOLATED FEDERAL LAW.
The results?
Nobody in trouble at VBA.
My friend Randy died from his leukemia.
The administrative VA people are crap.
What a country!
This has to be young vets. Like in there 20’s. I am surprised that there is any. I knew there has been gay in the military for ever. But to be trans. It’s hard to believe.
