Facing staffing issues, American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights
The Week ^ | Catherine Garcia

The company scrapped 123 flights on Saturday and 178 flights on Sunday, with 97 more canceled for Monday. All airlines are dealing with staffing issues connected to the coronavirus pandemic; in March 2020, when air travel all but stopped, thousands of employees were laid off or accepted buyouts, and now that people are flying again, there aren't enough workers. American Airlines said its catering contractor and wheelchair operators also aren't fully staffed.

I think the real "staffing issue" here is it's a losing battle to expect people to go to work for you when the government pays them more to stay home.

Look at the ten major hubs that AA operates out of (Phoenix, LA, DC, Philly, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, Miami, LaGuardia, JFK). Most of them would still have state authorities paying out unemployment. If you gazed at the flights cancelled...it probably won’t be flights from Miami going to Dallas, or Phoenix to Miami.

Maryland will lose the federal stipend on July 3. That should help out BWI.

I’ll be making my first post-COVID flight in October (United) and it will be interesting to see what has changed since my last one in 2019. Flying has transformed from a fun adventure to a humorless privacy invasionfest and I can’t imagine that helps the morale of the typical airline employee. I’ll bet a lot of airline customers are overstressed and worried about what they be exposing themselves to with all the disease paranoia. Imagine flying with 100 Howard Hughesesque germophobes in a tin can where every sneeze is viewed as akin to a case of leprosy and social distancing is probably non-existent.

Salaried blue-state Democrat university economists, who haven't missed a paycheck because of Da Covid, say that it's unpossible that blue state policies on the Uncle Sugar sugar is causing people to sit home and collect.

Yes. AA was big into the Gerogia backlash which should have been about voting irregularities instead of passing a law to help fix them. AA, Delta and Coca Cola all went woke over that.

AA ignored the 9-11 patterns.

Exactly.

The pandemic is an excuse and scapegoat.

The article seems to be saying that the problem is really with AA’s contractors more than the company itself.

“it’s a losing battle to expect people to go to work for you when the government pays them more to stay home.”

Yep. And we’re all losing from Covidiocy: we’re losing a great many small businesses, we’re losing availability of goods, our money and savings are rapidly losing their actual worth from inflation, our children are losing their childhood with friends, we’re losing faith in our government (that SHOULD happen).

I want to see Fauci in prison.

Pay more.

These companies are in competition with the US government for workers. They are manipulating the job market just like Free Traitors™ do pushing wages down down with LEGAL immigration and work visas like H-1B and L-1. No sympathy here.....

I think the real "staffing issue" here is it's a losing battle to expect people to go to work for you when the government pays them more to stay home.

As the article states that many took buyouts and they're not coming back. I doubt they're sitting at home getting paid by the government. Those that were laid off, if they haven't already found new lines of work, are looking for different jobs because it's been made very clear to them that they could get shut down again for COVID-21, COVID-22, etc., as part of a political ploy.

Many of these jobs were likely second income for couples and after spending a year at home raising their kids, these couples are asking themselves if the cost of daycare, both financially and mentally, is worth it.

I work with several people who could have retired at any time and did retire due to the restrictions and changes due to the lockdowns. They created numerous openings that will be difficult to fill and the contractors for American Airlines are likely in the same position.

Who, in their right minds, would think that you shut a country down for over a year, lay-off, furlough, buy-out, terminate the work force and expect to bounce back in a few weeks or months?
Do you not think that the workforce may bear some enmity?
Firms that once thought they were major players are finding out how fragile they are. Never mind the small businesses and mom & pop operation that have been wrecked by the 100,000s. When the worker bees or worker ants shoot you the finger, you’re in trouble. People are passed, it’s like sitting on a case off dynamite and the goverment is continuing to poke at and agitate the population. You think black are happy? You think whites are happy? You think Hispanics are happy? You think ghis commie clown show is going to walk in and take over? They are going to try this world wide. The mess the world is in today is no accident.
When the pushback comes you’re not going to be able find enough rope. Our would be oppressors and sycophants know this but they’re in so far they can’t back out. They can taste the fear in the back of their throats. It’s going to all end very badly.

On the plus side, if you want to work and you are flexible, NOW is the time to start looking.
My brother has been wanting to leave MN for probably 10 years.
Non-high tech but a company flew him in for an interview and he got it.

This wouldn’t have happened even during Trump.
