I wish I could remember the movie, but I think it was a Cold War drama from the late 1960’s or 1970’s. An American operative is discussing the rivalry between America and the USSR with a Russian operative, and the Russian operative shrugs and says something like, “It doesn’t make any difference to me. Every day your country is becoming more like Russia, and Russia is becoming more like America. Pretty soon, no one will be able to tell them apart.”

Prior to the Bolshevik Revolution we had a respectful relationship with Russia. Imperial Russia certainly did not share any of our governing principles. We were not reflectively hostile toward them. In fact during our Civil War we sheltered parts of the Russian fleet on the east & west coasts. It was of mutual benefit to both governments foreign policies at the time. They may never be our bosom buddies but there can be a non-hostile relationship. (Anyway countries don't have friends they have shared interests!) We can challenge them when they need to be challenged, ignore them when they need to be ignored and cooperate with them when it makes sense to do so. Saying what I think is obvious and realistic in no way makes me a Ruskie lover.
