PORTLAND, Ore — Educators and parents rallied on Saturday against nationwide legislation that would prevent "critical race theory" from being taught in schools.
Speakers at the rally at the Friendship Circle in Portland told KATU News that they support critical race theory -- which is a legal term used to describe systemic racism.
David Scholten is a fifth grade teacher with Portland Public Schools and they told KATU News that not everyone understands what goes on in the classroom.
There's a lot of confusion about whether or not what we're doing is divisive or not -- and we believe that systemic racism is divisive. Racism is divisive. And in order to heal, we need to come forward, and expose the whole truth of our nation," Scholten said.
This week, Florida joined more than half a dozen other states in banning critical race theory. The curriculum -- which teaches students that racism is systemic and embedded into many American systems and institutions -- has turned into a controversial academic movement.
Educators at the Portland rally on Saturday said they were not only rallying in support of critical race theory, but were also rallying in support of their fellow teachers of color.

The blacks here have tended to be quiet - the ones I know are fine people who are just like the rest of us except with darker skin. So Portlanders don’t understand what it’s like in other parts of the country.
