The very concentrated swarm of small earthquakes (most less than Mag 2.5 noticed just last week quieted on Wednesday and Thursday, but then resumed back to its unusual high levels Friday evening through Saturday morning.

I understand that a series of smaller quakes releases the pressure and decreases the chances of a larger magnitude quake...is that correct?

In general, yes, that is true. One of the reasons that the near-certain Magnitude 8.5 - 9.0 earthquake (with its tsunami) off of the Oregon Coast is so threatening. It is now “at its due point” - the last produced tsunamis that killed villages in Japan in January 1700.
A little, very concentrated swarm does indicate a magma movement in active areas. Here? Volcanoes do occur on the fault, but few down here iin this end of California in historical times.
BUT! It would let everybody blame earthquakes AND global warming on the destruction of the Imperial Valley. Let’s Biden off the hook, doesn’t it? Newsome too.
imho in time greenhouses and vertical farms are going to take a lot—if not all— of the business away from the imperial valley and most of the farms in Mexico and Canada that export their vegetables to the USA.

Mount Hood in Oregon is also experiencing a lot of small quakes these days.
Yes, but a volcano would be a very interesting result, even if unlikely and unpredicted..
Picture a zipper that runs from South to North starting at just South of the Salton Sea, ending at the eastern border of Washington State, and Canada. The zipper is the eastern border of California, Oregon and Washington.
The zipper is preparing to unzip and dump those three states into the Pacific Ocean.
That should do it!
Not that anyone cares anymore, but the military lost a bunch of planes and a nuclear bomb in the Salton sea
