United to buy 15 Overture jets from Boom Supersonic

United Airlines officials announced a commercial agreement with Denver-based aerospace company Boom Supersonic to add aircraft to its global fleet as well as a cooperative sustainability initiative – a move that facilitates a leap forward in returning supersonic speeds to aviation.

Under the terms of the agreement, United will purchase 15 of Boom’s Overture airliners, once the aircraft meets United’s safety, operating, and sustainability requirements, with an option for an additional 35 aircraft. The companies will work together on meeting those requirements before delivery.

Once operational, Overture is expected to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net-zero carbon from the start, optimized to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It’s slated to roll out in 2025, fly in 2026, and expected to carry passengers by 2029. United and Boom will also work together to accelerate production of greater supplies of SAF.

According to Business Insider the plane hasn’t even been built yet. It also looks awfully small.

These planes and their technology do not even exist yet.

So for now its all a mere PR and propaganda exercise for both companies. United burnishes their green credentials and puts some pressure on Boeing, and “boom supersonic” gets a headline to pump their stock, or encourage a debt placement.

It’s slated to roll out in 2025, fly in 2026

Just in time for all of the new Affirmative Action hires to be the flight crew. Instead of a St. Christopher statue on the control console as in the movie "Airplane", there will be a special spot reserved for a small statue of St. George of Floyd, the patron saint of people trying to move bad money. What could possibly go wrong?

I think this is corporate virtue signaling. There was nothing in the article about overcoming the problems that made the previous generation of supersonic jets unviable. They were uncomfortable. They were loud, and hot. They could only use a few airports because of noise ordinances. And, the cost per passenger mile was higher than the companies could charge for a ticket. Thus, they usually ran at a loss. On top of that “sustainable” fuel is likely to be significantly higher in price than ordinary fuel.

So, it’s either virtue signaling, or the company has decided that profit is not their goal.

Fake. This is a con. “sustainable aviation fuel”...

FTA: New aircraft will cut travel times 50%, operate on sustainable aviation fuel.

This is BS. The company has never built an airplane. Now a major airline claims they will buy a bunch. This story is all over the fake news.
Click bait, nothing else.
What next? GM will build a gazillion cars capable of driving to Mars, the Biden admin says will purchase all for Reparations benefit!
See, I can make up BS headlines too!

I think it will be for the very wealthy.

Of course it will be for the very wealthy. The advantage of this aircraft, if it ever comes to be, is that it will have much more range than the Concorde did, so it will be able to cover many of the Asia-to-Europe, Australia-to-California, and other long distance flights that the Concorde couldn't cover due to range limitations.

The second advantage this aircraft has over the Concorde is that it carries fewer passengers, so it more closely matches the demand for such high-priced yet time saving seats. The Concorde, ironically, was too big to capture the luxury market (not enough demand to fill the seats,) and too small to capture the tourist market economically (not enough cheap seats to sell in bulk.)

More than one aircraft wannabee company has come out of the Centennial Airport (Denver) area, and failed on promises.

Boom is highly undercapitalized to produce anything and they have yet to hit any of their previous promised milestones. This includes creating a new engine to power this magical beast. They are also poorly managed, so there is that too.

In fact, Boom occupies the failed Adam aircraft hangar. Adam Aircraft was also severely undercapitalized just as Boom is and failed because of it.

These companies follow then 80/20 to failure. They think because they spent only 20% of the capital needed and got 80% of the way to completion that they do not need to spend the other 80% of the capital to get the final 20% of the way to completion.

“First plane expected to fly this year.”

Let us know when that plane flies, Sunshine. You’re always far too gullible on technology promises.
