I was on active duty from 76-84. I saw the improvement of our soldiers with each passing year. The AVF works, but only when our leaders are leading and focused on the mission of the military...not on gay pride or transgender rights, or anything that detracts from the mission.
Was a good idea years ago,I think now it’s too late,every institution has been infected with Hate America attitudes.
The Connecticut legislature just yesterday passed an act declaring racism in Ct. a Health Emergency.

I served 4 yrs. back in the time between Korea & Vietnam. It was more or less considered peacetime, but they were drafting anyway. Rather than get drafted, I went down & signed up for the service branch of my choice instead of “theirs”. I didn’t really want to go, but saw no other good way out as I was young, unmarried, unable to go to college or Canada, etc. All in all, it was a good experience & I was able to spend 2 years in a foreign country & learn much, something I’d never be able to do otherwise. So I can’t see why young folks nowadays can’t do the same. I do realize that right now might not not be optimum timing for such a move, considering who our CIC is, but hopefully he won’t be there forever.

However, my sister and I joke about how people should do a mandatory year of retail work in their youth so they’ll better understand what retail workers have to deal with. (We both did part-time retail jobs as teenagers.)
I did my service: 30 years in the Air Force. If you will note, I said I’m NOT in favor of it, but IF it happens, it needs to not have the loopholes that the Selective Service system had.

If people want to save the world they can do that themselves. There is no reason to make others do what they deem important. This is mandatory community service on steroids. It is up to me what I do in life, I certainly don’t need the idiots running govt to dictate where they want to use me as a slave. Personally, I could care less about their little projects.

Most of the proponents are not thinking of service in the Armed Forces. Most young people could not pass the physical or maintain disciple.
The proponents seem to be planning urban community & infrastructure service...indentured servitude and a chance to indoctrinate.
Were you on premed, pre dental or interested in becoming a scientist or engineer (STEM)?
If not that is why you don’t understand. The courses in high school for those careers are building blocks for the college courses. You cannot have a 1-2 year hiatus without causing many of the people who would pursue those careers to get rusty enough to need a remedial year or two before college. Many would just seek a simpler path robbing our nation of the human resources needed to advance new discoveries in those fields. USA is already so far behind in STEM training that we risk being outpaced by many other Nations.
I took a year off from college after 1st year for personal reasons. I returned in the summer to get my sea legs back & took two simple psychology courses. It was brutal. I had lost the ability to assimilate knowledge at a rapid clip. I worked 10 hours a day on those simple courses and got A grades in both. I had never needed to study for more than an hour or two to keep up a 3.8 grade point in the hard sciences before.
I was able to succeed after the hiatus because I had parents who could support me, who could allow me a summer semester to prepare. How many people would not have those luxuries and under what pretext is the Nation putting those people’s ambitions & life paths at risk?
And for what gain? The chance for them to work on road gangs and under community organizers? For the opportunity to be badgered with critical race theory and other liberal lunacy?

I would love the rats to propose this idea (on occasion a few rat Congressman have, mostly black ones and that one douche from Maryland that ran for President and came in last) , nothing would get the youth vote to abandon them faster than suggesting that they be enslaved.
