Because firing someone for making a joke is not supported by Florida employment law, as a contractor at a former ITT company, I had to sign a 15 page “ethics” contract that allowed them to fire me for, among other things, making a joke. The agreement said, that under no circumstances was I allowed to tell a joke. The stated reason for this was, I kid you not, “You have no idea who you might offend.” But the real reason was liberalism can’t bear to be the butt of a joke. Therefore, they outlaw jokes. Writer Keven Alfred Strom said, “To find out who rules over you, find out who you can not criticize.” Jokes are generally criticism of the most effective and acidic kind.

Poor Bob. I liked him as a manager and an announcer (when I was still watching baseball), but he might getting too old to last much longer in such a high visibility job. He (like many of us) is from a time when I guy could good-naturedly joke about another guys clothes or whatever and both have a good laugh about it. People are now so thin-skinned and looking for racism and sexism at any turn, you have to walk on pins and needles.

Brenly has paid his rag dues. And he’s already got plenty of sensitivity. As a journeyman catcher, manager and broadcaster over the past 40 years (at least), he knows his way around these SOBs and has always gotten along well.
