Putting aside the hard science for a moment, wearing a mask in public spaces—especially indoors, where transmission is more likely—serves a broader social purpose: It says to those around us that, whatever our vaccine status, we value community safety.
When I walk outside my door into a densely populated neighborhood, I know as little about the life circumstances of the people I encounter as they do about mine. Are they, like me, fully vaccinated? Or are they in between shots, still looking for an appointment, or never planning to get a vaccine at all? Might they be in chemotherapy, or otherwise immunocompromised in some way that would prevent them from either getting a vaccine or experiencing its full benefits?

After I read through the article, the site listed the most popular articles from recent issues of the Atlantic; if I recall correctly, the second most popular had something to do with the evolutionary origin of many of their contributors, presumably including this Stevens person.

511,000 more deaths in 2020 from all causes than 2019. If we hadn't had COVID and some incredibly stupid public policies like canceling conventional medical treatment, we would not have had 511,000 more deaths. The sixx percent number is pretty meaningless.
I find it amazing that the same people that argue that nobody died of COVID last yrear are arguing that everyone is dying from the vaccine this year. Is pointing that out a hostile act? Or a Micro-aggression?
