If one of them happened to be a suicide boat, and turns toward the ship, you have 6 or 7 seconds to stop it. A good guy manning a .50 cal could get him IF he is switched on, ready, and KNOWS that his Captain will back him up solid.
Any hesitation or several boats turn at once, they are gonna sink something.
