OxyContin is extremely dangerous, and unless an individual requires immediate relief from extreme pain—say, from a horrific accident, medical procedure, or disease—it’s best avoided. Like its legion of prescription opioid brethren, it is, in effect, heroin in pill form. And yet thanks to the efforts of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma and the corporations that followed its lead, OxyContin is now consumed by millions of citizens who are addicted to it, and die from it, just like any other deadly narcotic. No matter Purdue’s protestations to the contrary, this so-called miracle drug has spawned a ghastly opioid crisis that from 2000 to 2019 caused 487,842 overdose deaths in America.
And as Alex Gibney’s latest documentary contends, this wasn’t an unfortunate side effect of a vitally needed treatment. It was a deliberate and dastardly crime, carried out in the name of profit.

LOL, I’m still hopeful that should you ever really *NEED* any sort of real pain management, the Doc’s hand you 2 aspirin and tell ya to call ‘em in the morning!
You’re a piece of work. A real “Pain Med Karen”. Booger off.
Then, as he worked in the field, he encountered a large number of decent folks who were prescribed pain meds (over-prescribed) and before they knew it, they were addicted, physically.
The addicts' stories had much in common. They lost their families, their homes, all of their wealth, and at some point, turned to heroine or fentanyl (from drug gangs) as these are cheaper than oxycontin. Many turned to petty crime to support their habit.
The officer, after working in the field, changed his mind about many (not all, of course) of the addicted. The drug ambushed a lot of very nice and productive folks completely unawares.
Big Pharma? I do not trust them.
That sounds oddly like the lamentations of an addict.

I was shocked to find that they gave oxycontin to my 18 year old nephew for his wisdom teeth surgery! What? Were they trying to get a teenager addicted?
He LOVED them - said he couldn’t wait until his next dose! Scary stuff!
When I had my wisdom teeth surgery in the 1980’s all I got was some Tylenol3 for the day or two of pain - you get over and it and get on with your life! It’s crazy what they’re doing now!

I don’t believe that.
They would have to live their entire lives in a cave to not know how addictive these drugs are.
And they would have to ignore their own body’s messages.
In fact, there are a percentage of people known as “chippers,” whom do not get addicted regardless of what substance they ingest.
I am one. I've dropped tobacco cold turkey several times. (Been off it 15 years now as I am no longer in social contact with smokers).
Had Oxycontin for about two months after major surgery about four years ago. No effect whatever when I went off it.
BTW the "party bag" someone mentioned? I had one after my surgery, too. Active ingredient was Fentanyl.
All through that experience I never once felt "high". (And I am of the '60s generation that knows from "high"). All opioids do to me is make me sleepy.
I've been taking a mild form (Tramadol) for about six years to help control severe and debilitating low back pain. If I miss a couple of days, I get a mild rebound headache for 24 hours. That's it. No craving, except for relief from the pain.
What blows me away is a side-effect of OxyContin: You get SEVERELY constipated. Something the surgeon's team failed to tell me about. How abusers deal with this is beyond me. (Months later my family doctor introduced me to Miralax.)
Big pharma has done a better job at addicting people to heroin than the Japanese did to the Chinese during WWII.
Grizzled old Cons told their life stories and made 2 memorable points:
1-Heroin is a great high.
2-You'll never be able to afford it and you'll be stealing from your moma and and your grandma to support your habit and when they're broke, you'll get busted for robbing banks and grocery stores.
Add to that, in the coming years I watched very successful, talented people ruin their lives due to addiction.
People do the job of addicting themselves.
An old girlfriend’s brother was a car painter who breathed too many fumes over the years and developed debilitating headaches. Doc prescribed Oxy which he became addicted to and was eventually cut off.
This drove him to any and all street drugs he could find and settled on crack as his favorite.
One night he couldn’t pay the crack house so they broke his leg.
And it all began with Oxy.
Addicted to pot? Figures.
You know Jack Sh!t.
But you think you know everything.
As most stupid people do.
Not everyone is super human. Debilitating pain clouds the mind and affects judgement. More than one good and decent person has become addicted from choosing either going insane or finding relief.

You should be seeking help with your psychosis with pain meds. I’ll take this opportunity to ask you again: what person close to you caused you pain (pun intended), with dope? Ex wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, son, daughter?
Who hurt you with pain meds?
Be truthful or be silent.
Admitting your problem is the first step to resolution.

That is true.
However, one day they have to choose again, addiction or normal life.
The vast majority of long term users do not need opiates to suppress pain after a week or two. After that they are just feeding the monkey.
I had a severe case of Shingles last year. It was the worst pain I experienced in my lifetime.
Beyond knee surgery, beyond Gall Bladder inflammation.
If I had access to opiates I most certainly would have taken them. No question. And I would have likely become addicted as it was a trial of several weeks of hell.
But I would not have continued them. I have been down that road before with benzodiazepines. And alcohol.
Because of my own weaknesses, I chose ibuprofen and coffee.
There is no worse feeling than addiction.
I got myself addicted to benzodiazepines and alcohol.
I hurt myself.
Just as all junkies do.
But I got free.
You might want to read a few studies on just how the brain works in regards to addiction.
And they manufacture FAR more than the amount needed to satisfy the legitimate demand.
The CCP floods America with fentanyl. It’s an act of war when they do it, and it’s an act of war when corporations do it.

I have personal experience to rely on.
Benzodiazepines are the most addictive substances known to man. And like alcohol, once addicted you cannot go cold turkey. It will kill you.
I know what it’s like to be sober for years, then out of nowhere comes the strong urge.
I know also the devastation of addiction, having lost jobs and two wives.
